Well tried the Simplesite set up and got a website....with a
picture that as nothing to do with carpet cleaning and no
text.....and no way of writing text.
Unless I am missing something it's pointless.

It might be good if you had more options, but there's so many 'free' ways of producing a basic website why would you bother with this?  ???
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

John,

Search and study Wordpress. You cant get more basic (and get a decent website at the end of it) than that.

And its free!

It all depends what you are trying to achieve.

If you have a free web build site how would you get it to be seen? Even the free web build sites can take some getting used to.

If you are not so savvy or perhaps lack the creativity it may not be the way to go and would be best left in the hands of a professional web designer.

On the other hand if your enthusiastic and want to get your head down, free web builders can be quite dynamic http://www.weeblytemplate.com/weebly-templates.html
not quite free I think £20 or £30 for the template plugins but the best around imo and and childs play once you get the hang of it.

Wordpress (as above) is probably the best of all, but hey ho, it takes some getting used to. If you'v never tried web building before, it takes some time to learn.
The good thing about Wordpress is that SEO is automated and regarded as one of best web builders avalable.

Hosting and buying domains puts a lot of people off and makes the likes of Weebly etc attractive, but of course then you don't own what you are putting your energy into and could disappear over night.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.
