Start up time for Tax Purposes
« on: May 17, 2012, 10:09:02 am »
Hi
I am officially no longer employed got my P45 today so I reckon I should get registered straight away and start paying NI.
If I register my start up time as from now can I still claim expenses and start up costs against tax for purchases prior to start up such as Van, Equipment etc..
Or will they reckon my start up time from the day I first started purchasing for the business?

as far as I am aware you have a three month period in which you have to register.
You should be able to claim back your expenses for the business, the worse case you will have to sell them to the business, but an accountant will sort that out with you I 100% recommend you get one, they save you time and money.

I would call hmrc to get the facts

No more 3 month grace. You should have registered the day you started. I was told this at a HMRC course lately. Give them a call and have a chat they are very helpful. Tell them you have just started production lately purchases your equipment a while back.Good luck

If you want to  claim for start up costs you would be better trying business gateway as it is called in Scotland not sure what it is called down south.

Hi KS and all
I've investigated this and it has to be for certain types of business in certain areas and you have to prove that the business would not be able to startup unless you had this grant.
