To be honest, if it was me and it was in the middle of 2 others that I do, then I would quite fancy it for myself  :)

I would have expected him to offer it to you before taking it for himself, given the circumstances.

You encouraged him to find his own work, this is what he is doing. They asked him he is free to take on whatever work he likes.

How has he got this customer? Has he canvassed this street knowing full well you work the majority of it - or has this customer called him? If its the latter, then fair play to him
If it was me, I'd clean it and keep it for myself

If he has now gone full time on the windows he will need every job he gets, however when his round is fuller he may well offer it to you?

given the circumstances i would agree its only polite considering you have been helping him etc and 19 is alot that u got so its obvious but maybe he just needs the money really badley he doesnt need to be a bad person for not offering it to you.

why you ordering equipment for him?you might as well give him half your round!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

i think its a fine line between being friendly and helping him out as he could take the pee.

i just look after myself and dont do favours for people when it comes to my business.i used to years ago and a few guys just took the pee.canvassing my work and telling customers id packed in!! >:( >:( >:(

seriously stop being so helpful to him and just concentrate on your own business!!

It is a fine line Daz - between being friendly and helpful and sawing off the branch you are sitting on.

I remember a chap (still on reasonable terms) who I assisted with others to start - helped him choose the "right van" popped round to sort his R/O etc. Advised him on poles etc.

Then he started canvassing and happened to cross into areas where I have a lot of work - he picked up the odd house here and there (not my custies but neighbours) - fair enough.

Then I put a little ad in a local mag and the next month he puts his ad in too.

All fair enough - but I drew my horns in a bit after that and have to admit that when he was scouting to borrow a very long and expensive pole I declined.

It just felt as if it was all one way.
It's a game of three halves!

When I first started, a friend took me on and taught me the ropes on window cleaning. Three months down the line I started up on my own, although we would sometimes work a day for each other as well. When I went alone, I promised not to canvass his work.

A mutual friend, who used to be a customer of his, approached me to clean her windows. She lived in a road where he had probably half the houses in the street.

I agreed to do hers, and genuinely hoped none of his customers there would approach me. One (who was unhappy with him) did, and I reluctantly agreed to his as well. One day my friend drove past while I was doing them. He was not happy.

Eventually he changed careers, I ended up with most of his old customers and he forgave me, but if I could turn back time, I feel I should have told him that his customers had approached me. I don't believe in patches, (my friend did to a degree) but I felt that I was out of order because he got me started in this business and felt that I had done the dirty on him.

eyup dave,i think morally the guy should pass it on,no question, actually he isn,t very forward thinking, you probably get loads of people asking you to clean for them in areas you don,t cover etc  and would gladly pass them on to him but now he,s got no chance, a mate of mine started about 6 mnths back and i passed his number on to quite a few people and he always rings to thank me, its good to have good friends on the inside,i think alienating yourself from other cleaners is barmy...ps i havn,t forgot about that other matter,if you want to text me i,ll let you know wots happening..cheers
