The truth about rain?
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:42:24 pm »
So for years I've been saying the old stuff, rain doesn't make your windows dirty it's dust and pollen we work in all weather etc etc....

But the other day maybe because I didn't need to push it for ages as the weather was so dry someone said oh it's raining not today please ,a customer for 2 years I thought sod it ok see ja next time wanted to go home anyway...

But whats the truth about rain why does everyone think the same the good customers the bad customers all assume the rain either gives them a free wash or most think it's not worth doing cos the rain makes windows dirty.

Are all customers really wrong? It's like everyone vs you on the rain days
I've seen results in the rain and it's perfect but I wonder sometimes why are they so adamant to the point that we could loose an established good customer over a bit of rain maybe they know something we dont :/

I thought that maybe the rain would bring down anything that's floating about up there? There has been some episodes with volcanic ash covering cars after rain. Maybe the rain brings down the pollen and exhaust fumes too and years before all the coal fumes.

So maybe the windows do get dirty when it rains?

I think it's been said that most customers would have their windows cleaned 2-3 times a year if we let em.

Cleaning monthly or even 6-8 weeks is still regular to the customer and they see the rain as an excuse to save a few quid.

I think that the point of standing order is a good argument.

Say you pay to goto say a yoga class (or something you do regular like this) if it's pay as you go you'd be more inclined to miss the odd class because you can't be bothered and save a few quid.

If you've already paid you'd want your monies worth. :D

It's the wind that is the culprit. Unfortunately wind and rain generally go together and make the windows dirty. Dust generally settles on horizontal areas fist but if it's windy then it's going to stick to anything wet.
Some days the rain cleans the glass other days it dirty's the glass. most customers feel that bad weather makes their windows dirty again and would rather not waste their money and besides they look ok without the sun anyway.

No-one really knows why, despite all the experts on here  ;).

IMO this is why   ;)   it stems from the days of trad cleaning when detergents were used. This used to create an invisible film on the glass once it had been bladed off. If it rains on this film of detergent it then dissolves in the water droplets that are on the glass. When they evaporate the detergent is left on the glass, only this time in the shape of the droplet now and not as an invisible film.

Thats why we can clean WFP and leave drops of water on the glass because there is no detergent in it and people think that rain makes glass dirty. Its the detergent on the glass that makes glass dirty not the rain. The rain just dissolves it.

Even tradded, a window that's been rained on, once dry is still clean.  Bird mess, spider mess, dust etc doesn't somehow magically end back onto the windows because it's rained.

I think it stems from when we all had coal fires and air pollution was abysmal.  I think the rain picked up the soot and other contaminants on the way down, and it was left on the windows.  I mean when you go to Bath, you can see buildings that haven't been cleaned and they're completely black from the sooty atmosphere.

And now it's kinda an old wives tale that a minority of folk will use to miss a clean and save a few quid.  I really don't want customers like that.  I just drop them, always have, and consequently I'm full up with decent customers.

I'm sat right next to a window that's been rained on umpteen times and it's still clean.

I explain to customers - like I did this morning in the humping rain - that rain water is soft water and won't affect the clean.

it goes back to the days when rats tails were used that used to smear in the rain, then it was washing up liquid and scrim marks.

just educate your customers and guarentee the work, have been doing new cleans all day today in the rain and each person smiled when they paid  ;D
