The engine sound has changed a lot. It's much higher, almost like it is reviving but it isn't. Could it be leaning on the gear box and so sounding different?

Of course it can still tick over, obviously would mean less valves bent and the engine would be missing, same as burnt out valves etc,

Very difficult to say here or there the extent of damage ,but a car still running would indicate less damage,

tickover= idle speed .   they never will idle if a valve is bent,in fact almost impossible to start once valves bent

when mine went on the side as yours on basically the same van, the engine dropped and broke the plastic casing and the cam belt was rubbing on that, once back in position and any broken plastic cleared it was fine, it was struggle to refit by myself and took ages to realign if I was closer to you I would take a look but I am miles away, at the left hand side of your engine as you look at it there is three bolts, check these that is where they drop

It'll start and tick over no problem but the engine sounds very different. It cuts out if i try to move it though.

No, the bolts had come loose. He reconed that the engine had been out at some point and the bolts not properly tightened.
