« on: April 23, 2012, 06:26:31 pm »
got a vivaro high top, spent a bit on it lately, having problems with the red service light which debilitates the engine when it comes on,i switch engine off whilst im going along, although the light comes on  again it then runs ok.
my mechanic has tried everything with the ecu unit which tells you whats wrong
we are now sending this unit away to be tested if at fault they can be fixed or replaced at a large price

Surely the Vauxhall dealer will be your best bet, they might not be the cheapest option but highly likely they will know straight away what the problem is.

I've always used the dealer with my vivaro and never regretted it, sometimes you can end up paying more with a general mechanic while they guess what's wrong ,

Whilst I tend not to use main dealer as early days the service was awful, with something like this you haven't really got a choice.

Trouble is you will almost certainly be told the most expensive option to repair. I was once quoted almost £1000 for a repair that ended up costing £10 with a local firm, makes it difficult to trust again after such an experience.

That said, running whilst this problem persists could lead to all sorts of problems.

One final option is to log on to a Vauxhall or Vivaro forum, there'll be one out there for sure.

Have a look at the electrical connector under the front seats a real common problem on renaults ,I have a primastar by the way ,and my light would come on as well as the air bag light . www.renaultforums.co.uk or try this site

Had this myself when spare boots under the seat caught the connector, but I do not recall the symptoms being the same.

Had exactly the same problem on my Traffic.(same as vivaro)..cost about £120 to fix, was a sensor.....not got time to trawl paperwork right now but will find out what it was called and post later.

Garry....I bet it's the "turbo boost valve"...cost me £91.99 inc vat at a local independent.

Same as you engine light on, power lost....had to keep switching engine off and on while travelling to regain power/light off,  hoping the steering lock wouldn't come on!!!!! not good.

Hope this sorts it, Tony.

Main dealers are fitters not mechanics...

Renault wanted £750 to replace a diesel injector that was blowing. Local garage charged £0.99 for a  new seal and £40 for labour.

Had same problem on Primaster (same van) was crank shaft sensor.

I had something very similar to this.
Turned out it was the airbag sensor which is the cable under the drivers seat.
check the connection.

Many faults will result in van going into "limp home mode". Surely the main dealers diagnostics can pinpoint it.
