Got a small job next week,Just doing two flights stairs and two landings in a townhouse.
Out of interest, would you consider cleaning the two landings first, then two flights stairs, or, top landing, flight stairs,middle landing and then last flight of stairs.

This was just a thought I had, I'm always happy to try new ways of doing certain cleaning jobs.

I'd prespray it all, then extract from top down. The lower levels (you'd assume) would see more traffic, so this method gives them longer dwell time.

I'd pre-spray bottom to top, extract top to bottom.  The thing is you'll need to tie off your hoses half way up so doing both stairs and then both landings will mean a lot of fannying around, up & down with hoses, re-securing them.....  Just for the sake of changing tool 3 times it's easier to work back down in one movement

Given your question and parameters this is the order I would do it in.

Prespray top to bottom or bottom to top-grand scheme of things this part doesn't take the time.

Hook hoses over newel post.

Assuming the landings are more than just a little square then clean both landings with normal wand.

Switch to stair tool for both sets of stairs.

here here best way ive found , but i do tie pipes around half way to stop them falling down as i am quite small and find its easyer for me to do this ,

... exactly because of that logic:  the first bit you spray is usually the dirtiest bit which you extract last, allowing maximum dwell time, whereas right at the top is normally cleanest and needs little dwell.  Unless you clean a lot of basements

Point taken, I usually pre spray and clean dirty areas (traffic lanes) a second time anyway.

were both fine thanks just getting back into this cleaning thing , havent cleaned a carpet myself in two years been to busy tattooing , just getting afew weeks in now to keep my hand in the game forgot how hard it is cleaning carpets

I cable tie my hoses and snip them off with cable cutters while I work down the stairs. Find it quicker.

pre-spray from bottom to top. Then good agitation with brush concentrating on the nose of the step, then pre-spray again if needed (or only the bottom steps).

I use two tools, carpet wand and small hand tool for steps. I find the bigger wands designed for stairs (the 8inch one's) are to clumbsy and leave alot of water behind.

Carpet dawg, I'm with you on the large stair tool, I do find they leave a lot more water in the carpet, so I quickly go over the steps with my smaller stair tool, even doing this after , I still find using bigger stair tool is quicker overall.

run up the stairs pre-spraying as you go, with hand tool, and hang vac/solution hoses @ corner posts
en route. back to van collect carpet wand. agitate clean top landing/stairs/landing/stairs out the door.

I always set up my machine first,before I do anything,just to make sure it's working ok,nothing worse than putting a load of pre spray down , then finding your pump has gone.Happened once, and don't want to risk it again.
Start from the top and work down,wrap hose around bannister .Do have a Prochem 4 inch tool, but find I get better results with the small upholstery tool, and couldn't get on with the connector angle on the prochem tool

Not the machines fault either.
Large living room fully pre sprayed and machine
kept tripping electrics even with just trying one
vac motor.
