Register as self employed now or later
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:23:31 pm »
Hi,

I've been told that I can register as a sole trader 3 months after startup. I don't want to register straight way as I can't predict how and if I get on well in the business.

What if during that 3 months customer wants an receipt or invoice?. Can I issue him one without being self emloyed ?

How does the receipt/invoice should look like ? What should be on it?

Thanks,

Bart

if its domestic window cleaning they wont ask for a receipt.

if you need one though you can just buy an invoice or receipt book at staples, whsmiths, amazon.

and yes you can give them a receipt even if you re not registered self employed, so long as you do register.

any monies that you earn will have to be declared even if you decide to do some thing else
get some advice from an accountant or the local tax office

There is no legal requirement to furnish anyone with a receipt in the circumstances you describe. There is a legal requirement to raise an invoice when a sale occurs [service/goods].............. I would imagine the second you issue an invoice you have changed your status to self employed by default. It should have your name and address on it, a description of the goods/services provided and the customers name and address on it.

The Tax people want you to register before you do any work but it does create a problem if it does not work out for you. Most domestic do not do invoicing or any paper work as they collect payment.
