Fed up with Merlin, which 4040?
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:30:00 pm »
The time has come to get rid of the p.o.s. Merlin and go for a 4040  ???

Any suggestions/links would be much appreciated guys....

We've got a booster pump which takes pressure up to 65-70 psi and tap tds of between 250 and 310 ppm....

After shelling out 300 odd quid on the Merlin and replacing membranes and carbon filter after 3 months of use, in the hope of bringing tds down below 40 (its now on 69!) I realise I could of bought a 4040  >:(

Cheers

Dave

I can't work out why different people get different results with a merlin.

I'm still getting 21 - 30 from a tap tds of about 300 yet someone else I know locally who bought one around the same time is getting about 75 from the same tap tds.

Dave - is grumpy  Franky right that you brought unbranded membranes  :-X

anyway - have you checked the O rings - these can easily get 'pinched' and let water bypass the membrane
an i assume unlike some1 else you took the wrapping off  ???

Both of us has the original membranes. I bought mine in November and my mate bought his, after seeing mine, in December and yes, the wrappers have been removed and that posting about leaving the wrappers on was a classic.

Interesting about the o rings. I'll phone my mate up tomorrow.

Something I read somewhere a few years ago and I don't know how true it is but it seems to make sense, is that two ro system in two different places may have the same tds output by one will go through resin quicker than the other to maintain zero tds because although the ro tds is the same, what solids are in the ro water can be very different.

That in turn can affect how quickly resin gets used because some impurities are harder to remove than others.

Going by that, the thing is with just going by tds output from any ro, is that the tds value is only part of the story. It's what impurities were in the tap water to start with as two places with the same tds might have completely different impurities in the water and the same for the output.

I think.

The Merlin variations seems to be as a result of water pressure AND water volume differences.
My Merlin is 500 feet above sea level, poor water pressure and gravity fed from a reservoir with a drop of 60 feet, incoming tds is 140, 70 psi pump and outgoing tds of 19-30.
My mates Merlin set up is near sea level, fed from surface water with very poor pressure and little drop, incoming tds is 300, 70 psi pump pressure and outgoing tds of 11-15.
Mates set up is 2inch pipe until tap then standard half inch from tap.
He makes 1000 litres of product per 16 hours I make about 600.

Cheers for replies chaps...

The new membranes came from Wintecs and are genuine ones.

Darran, yes checked the "o" rings after you suggested this last time,  and they are fine...and yes removed the wrappers!!

Had a word with Gardiners today and am waiting on a call back to discuss one of their ro s .

Thanks for the input everyone.... Can you please put some links up of your 4040s ??

Cheers

Dave

ps Gav you can have it for 100 ;D

The picture they have is a 20" unit. The membranes are not that much more expensive for the 40/40. So to replace 2 x 20" are not going to be cheap at all.
I see there is one on ebay for £995.00 which is way OTT IMHO.

Hi
They have a 4040 setup aswell with the prices of the membranes underneath which are very reasonable.
To replace the 2 prefilters every 4 months cost £20 so they are very cheap to run.
Did you read all the imformation?

No problem mate -always worth double checking !

i loved my merlin - it served me very well for nearly 3 years

cant help with the 4040 - other than it's part of a P/f set-up and with the booster pump gives give 3 to 5 TDS  ;D

so i have no inclanation to open up the ro housing ... :P

Just ordered my pure freedom reverse osmosis system
4040 setup with 20 inch prefilters minus the di vessell as i already have 1.
Looks well thought out and will go in my garage instead of my van.Being mobile means i can stick it in van or garage best of both worlds.
Only thing its missing is no wheels on the bottom to push it around with,so i will sort that out when it arrives monday.
Hopefully that be the last thing i buy for a while as ive spent far to much this year on items ;D
