Making your 'Own Spotter' solution
« on: April 04, 2012, 12:17:45 pm »
Hi,
Was wondering what your thoughts on this are? I can get a clear bottle and trigger for 38p and labels are pence also, and would mix a cleaning solution up (microsplitter?) and dispense from a drum in van with tap when needed? I know there are those of you out there who do this.

I was wondering about any implications there may be and if it is worth it? Currently i am spending a £1k plus a year on giving these things away as all our literature states ' a free bottle with every job'? (and yes, we do sell some also!)
Any advice (positive and negative!) greatly accepted!!!
Justin

How much money would making your own save you?  and how much extra time would it take to make your own, considering you would have to print out a label and attach it onto the bottle?

I would be a bit creative with saying you give a free bottle with every clean, tell them you give a 250ml bottle free with every clean.......... but also sell a bumper big 1lt bottle for just £8.... i bet every one will buy the bigger bottle

Hi Mike,

Great idea about the giveaway and then the 1ltr bottle! Regarding time, i dont think it is that time consuming. The labels will be printed in one batch and i can fill the bottle as and when. I gave lots away at country shows and it was brilliant for my business! I am going to do the same this year, so i could make a considerable saving on the cost and therefore do more shows?

Hi Justin,

Where will you get the bottles from for 38p ?
Also will you print your own labels and will they be waterproof ?

I looked into doing this a while back and found when added up all the bits and pieces you didnt save much money ? so was easier just order them already done.

would probably do it myself if I ould find the bottlwes cheap enough !

Regards

Steve

Maybe John Kelly is about to answer this, he'll know, but I think there is a legal aspect you haven't thought of.

Legal things aside, come on mate life's too short :)

For the amount you might save, which won't be very much, is it really worth it?

Only problems really if you use any hazardous products in the solution. Hardest part is the labels. You don't want to be using crap ones where the colours run as soon as it gets damp.

labels are (or were) £60 a 1000 from print carrier, semi water proof, (very good)

i do my own but to be honest you don't save that much and it is a pain, i think they work out at around 85p all in, (depending on strength of mix) luckily my son sticks the labels on and i fill a few each day to leave with custies. if you've got time or staff sitting around doing nothing then its probably worth it if your giving them away, if however your a one man band, very busy and getting good money for your work, or selling them then you would be better off getting them from restoremate or some other reputable company.

We do our own and save around £1.20 each over buying them in. (500ml). We give one to every customer and everyone we do quotes for. Customers love them and they work really well, not just as stain removers but as a marketing tool because they have something with your name on it in the cupboard which serves as a reminder, we even offer a free refill.
Never sold them as people like to get something for free.

Where are you going to store almost two thousand empty plastic bottles that you'd have to buy at a time?!!

Seriously though, we gave a way a few hundred at county shows and it was brilliant business for us, gave me a chance to talk to potential customers as i was handing over the bottle and getting their email address. best bit of marketing i done last year.
