30 Day Terms
« on: April 03, 2012, 02:05:56 pm »
Has anyone stopped or thought of the consequences of doing this, just been bumped for £2000 from January just received letter today from administrators explaining the company is in administration. I'm even getting domestic customers asking if I will just send them a bill

Seriously considering this as it is taking longer and longer to get the money in and I still have bills to pay.

Steve,

Reduce it to 14 days or whatever.

Re. commercial. write up a a short payment terms, inform the client when they book you of these terms and get someone to sign it. IME they are willing to accommodate as long as they know up front. I find if they want you to do the job they won't let this be an obstacle to using you.

Re. Domestic, never have any problems myself, collect payment on completion.

Steve thats a bad one mate am sorry..

Still not sure how it would stand the smaller payment days..

Seems companies like to pay late as its probably the same with them.

Your right with some domestics wanting the bill sending but only a few thankfully.

Tried the early payment discount type thing but no one took it up still wait till the last moment to pay after numerous phone calls, just been through my accounts and I'm owed around 3k dating back to January not including the 2k I've been bumped for.

Been on phone most of the afternoon chasing payments all gave different excuses cheque run next week, 6 week pro rota run, accounts dept on holiday, cannot pay by card as the manager not available, haven't received invoice etc etc

If it gets done to me once that's it I won't work for them again, or I get paoid before I start. If it's a first time customer I ask for payment on completion, allowing enough time between booking and the job to get payment organized. I often get met with "oh we don't work like that", I just reply I do but if they want 30 day terms it costs +10%. I learned long ago on commercials that even if it's £5000 it's no use to me if I don't receive it.

Currently chasing a letting agency for a  payment outstanding since Feb,they did the usual letting agent scam, telling tenants carpets were cleaned prior to them moving in,tenants moved out and said they were not done prior to them moving in, and show us the invoice to prove they were,in the meantime I had cleaned them,so it's me who is sitting it out.Keep getting fobbed off.
Nothing like the amount the op is down though, that must hurt  >:(

Dom jobs is payment upon completion, com jobs normally 14 days

I think this may be common this time of year with it being year / month end.

Everyone will want their money in their accounts to make their balance sheets look good.. then payment wil come out of next years budget..

My missus is an accountant at a large company and this is common practice more so at this time of year... although she pays me on time :)

Not sure about the one going into administration though..

Good luck..

It may look and sound real on the paper you have but words on paper are sometimes not worth the paper its written on, go to the building and have butchers for your self.

Sorry to hear that Steve but it's not for me, payment on completion in most cases is what I like. Not interested in the bigger commercial jobs, been stung in years past.
Work I do for letting agents and small businesses, know that they have to bring the cheque book or have one waiting at the office the same day or Baccs. If they can't do that, I'm not interested, someone else can go clean  their carpets and let them wait for the money.
