my slx has worn on the top section so i have to clamp it a bit lower.is there anything i can do to get it to clamp tight with no spinning?i heard alex mention coating the top bit with a lacquer of some sort.the pole is a year old now.

i also have a 22ft clx and the same has happened to that although thats worse.do you think its worth just replacing the whole top section?

A cheap simple way is to wrap some electrical tape around the top inch so it acts as a stop, then the pole can't collapse fully then you will be clamping on an unworn bit, or you could remove the pole insert cut a couple of inches off the pole and then reglue the insert.

I think cutting some off is the way to go.you might need to cut 10 inches of for it to clamp properly or just get a new section cant be that exspensive.

I don't extend the top section of my clx 22 that often, only if needed as it is the weakest part of the pole.

So on most average houses top section stays down.

Hi Lee, no secret really. I've got a trigger on the pole, and the pole hose goes on a pole hose tidy from purefreedom. Hence the pole hose is virtually off the ground at all times so no dirt travels up the pole. If you do hear feel some grit in it, fully extend it, and lower it with a cloth. I can't remember the last time I took it apart to flush it. Seems to work really well as it's just fine really. Sure there is some wear on the sections but will be fine for some time to come. I'd imagine the newer poles to be even more resistant to wear.

The sections wear out the other end as well where they clamp when fully extended. Get a year out of a pole and bin it. They are what? £130 ? thats about 50p a day. And its tax deductable.

I have been down the road of replacing sections and clamps. It can extend the life but by the time you buy them and pay shipping its hardly worth the effort.

As has been mentioned there are a couple of things that can be done to extend the life of a section that has worn in one place.

1. Simply do not fully close or open the section by about 2cm and clamp in this new position.
2. Wrap insulating tape about 5 times around the top of the section just below the clamp.
3. You can re-coat this worn spot with a two-pack epoxy resin (araldite rapid or similar). Mix a little up and scrape it on the worn area making sure it goes on very thin and smooth. Leave to dry and then sand smooth. This will usually last a good few months and allows the section to be used normally again.

When all else fails you can replace the worn section with a new one.
