Thanks Jim, I'll check out solutions.  Incidentally, sorry if off topic but, in your experience what sort of area would you cover per litre of pre-spotter?

Thanks   :)

No probs.

Pre-spray (sorry to be pedantic!) coverage varies according to the carpet construction, pile fibre, pile depth (remember it's a 3D object you're cleaning), product being used, technique being used..... soil conditions.... many things :)

A basic rule of thumb I work to is to apply enough to do the job but stop short of over-wetting.  It's just something you get a feel for as you go along.

As an example, if I was using a portable system to clean an average sized through lounge (230ft²) which was a polypropylene pile, and quite grubby, I'd probably put down a good 4-5 litres.  However the same sized carpet which was an 80/20 in good condition would probably only need 2-3 litres.

It's no good just tickling it, whatever carpet you're cleaning.. you have to be committed because fibres need wetting out to make your product work.  But you need to know your limits, and have a feel for what is "enough" and what's "too much".  The back of your hand is the most sensitive precision instrument you possess :)

I'd suggest when you get the opportunity, get yourself as many different carpet samples of different types as you can and wet them up progressively from one side to the other, so one side is lightly damp and the other is sodden.  Brush them over and then after 5 minutes look at the back to see if it's wetted through.  On some carpets you'll be amazed how little water in the pile is needed to wet the back.

But don't be under any illusion that no carpet cleaners get carpet wet to the backing... I'd even go out on a limb and suggest that after extraction a lot of carpets would be at least a bit damp on the back.  But within acceptable limits, this moisture will not cause harm and will wick back up and evaporate in reasonable time.

Sorry for the ramble :-\

I'd say most CC brands are using similar ingredients and perhaps manufactures
Doubt if any UK supplier is handling any form of manufacture ?

I doubt if most would notice any difference in performance if blind tested ..

spm
shockwave

I have used powerburst , blitz Etc  on my own carpets and they re soil 4 x as quick as spm and shockwave if its not good enough for me  why should it be for my customers , and yes i did acid rinse
That's a bit of a sweeping generalisation to say a carpet resoils 4 times more quickly than another product as there are so many other factors that could explain it and most more obvious that the prespray used.
Simon

Simon I have told you my findings at home with two kids and all there mates in and out with power bust they are dirty again in 6 weeks even with regular vacing with spam its near 24 weeks before they need doing . Not a sweeping statement just what I have found .powerburst is good and gives amazing results but doesn't last but who cares that ship will have sailed

So you're saying pb is causing the resoiling and not the constant traffic - doesn't make sense to blame resoiling on a single factor when there are so many others that are far more likely to be the cause.
Ships do sail away and then come back 2 weeks later.

Not being funny, but, I thought you got resoiling from detergent based presprays because it has not been completely extracted.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

And this is where it starts to get complicated, because modern day detergent based presprays are designed to break down to a neutral condition after a given amount of time.... well at least that's what they tell us.
