Caravan Ovens!!
« on: January 04, 2006, 05:06:14 pm »
Hi folks,
I'm looking for any information regarding caravan (mainly static) oven cleaning please. I'm thinking this "could" be a profitable market but I've never dismantled or cleaned one before, I live in a holiday area with literally dozens of caravan parks dotted all over the coast so the potential is there!
Has anyone "professionally" cleaned any and if so, did they differ greatly from normal domestic ovens?
How long did it take and how much did you charge?
Any information would be greatfully received and appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

hi just a side issue

at press, as i understand it, all work carried out in a proffesional capacity on a caravan gas supply system, nows falls under the same sort of rules for gas appliances in caravans as it does in fixed abodes, ie you have to be a registered, certificated contractor to do any work to a gas appliance if you are not you face heavy penalties and possible jail.

cheers

I won't be dismantling any of the gas fittings, only the sides/rear panel of the oven if they can be removed and/or the hob parts but NOT the gas feed jets or anything to do with the gas supply.
Thanks for reply,

you missed the point. if you tamper with gas equipment in a proffesional capacity( ie if its not your own)you need to be licensed. nobody cares if people kill themselves through ineptitude, but if you do, whilst you are being paid well the powers that be will want thier pound of flesh. just loook around and see how many qualified plumbers got out of gas work because of the corgi regs

Thanks Carloso, does that mean, in theory, that gas ovens no matter whether in a caravan or a house can only be cleaned by licensed personnel?
Would you know of any websites I could look at to get any more information regarding this subject?
If it means a whole minefield regarding cleaning gas burning equipment (no doubt including gas barbecues etc) then I might be better (and perhaps every other oven cleaner) sticking to electric ovens.
Thanks again Carloso for the information.

hi bulldog
as i am aware the regs only apply to caravan gas equipment.
( i may be seeing someone who has registered to work on this equipment tonight ( fri 7th) so will try to find out more for you.
re the domestic oven side, well the law says that to work on gas equipment you have to be corgi reg so if you are diss assembling in any way who knows, but if i were working in the oven end of the business i would find out properly

Cheers Gaza,
If push comes to shove m8 I'll not be touching anything "gassy"!!
I'm just wanting to clarify the position so's I'm not breaking any H&S laws, I'm going to give the H&S executive a buzz too to see whether "maintenance" of gas appliances also covers general cleaning.

Can you check on that.................we are actually caravanners and I'm sure that you don't need to be Corgi registered.

It may have changed recently but I'd love to know for sure.

Hi all,
Just an update on the "working on gas ovens" health and safety subject.
I've just spoken to Corgi and their official answer is that so long as you are not doing work on the gas supply or items associated with the supply of gas, you don't need to be Corgi registered.
They also commented that a lot of caravans would not come under Corgi rules because they are not classed as permenant dwellings.
Hope this helps all you gas oven cleaners out there!
Tom
P.S. Thanks to everyone for their input.
Still no caravan oven cleaners out there who could give me advice?  ;)

AHHH You want to clean caravan ovens well I have been cleaning and repairing static caravans for 20yrs now and have found the only time an oven is used is sometimes at the begining of the season and at the very end of season,my cleaners mainly only have to clean the hob bit the oven might only be used for pizzas and warming things up sao all you get is a bit of drippy cheese on the bottom and sometimes the shelving and that about all
If anybody has work that needs doing in the south dorset area gis a ring on 07765164970 and we will be pleased to help. Offices, pubs, caravans, holiday let cottages all permanant or temp gis a ring.

Thanks caraman,
I'll maybe do a few freebies at the start of the season just to see what they are like (how long they take/different oven materials etc) just to get my hand in then see what happens.
Thanks again for your input.

The most you are going to need is a good household oven cleaner at the very worst, most likley you could get away with hard surface cleaner. The only really dirty bit will be the cooker hob ie the gas rings but they all come apart in so much that they lift off and put in hot soapy water, the grill pan area might get a bit dirty and grill tray mesh gets discoloured but that is normal it doesnt stay chrome for long.
You got to remember that people only stay for a max 2 weeks and they do a lot of eating out.
