Laptop dying - a warning!
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:17:35 pm »
Was using my laptop yesterday when it suddenly cut out.  It's a few years old now and the hard drive had been making a few clicking noises for the past couple of  months so just before crimbo I got hold of an external drive and copied all my work, music and photo stuff just in case.

It wouldn't switch back on so panic mode set in - I haven't backed up my work up since december!!  Also, I don't think we realise how much we use our computers - I use mine to build/amend/update my website, do my accounts, handle all my email and my other ebay business and get on here etc.

I managed to get it going again thank Stella and saved all recent work again - phew!  But it made me realise how much I rely on it.

And the moral - get yer data backed up regularly - you have been warned!

Everything relating to my business goes into one folder including George back ups twice a day.
that folder automatically backs up to Dropbox whenever anything changes, even a full stop.

You can never be too carefull

I've a humongous spreadsheet with all my customer details, dates, telephone numbers, payments outstanding; the lot; and I email it to myself everyweek; so should my computer go down, I can get a new computer and retrieve my information from my e-mail.  It's simple and it works.

I also have a noisy external hard drive that I back up my C Drive onto every now and again; for photos 'n' stuff.

I use the internet backup service £15 a year, this was tested out when my laptop wouldn't startup.

In about 15 mins george was re-installed and was sent my last backup.

probably just overheated.
turn it over and stick the vacuum cleaner pipe over the fan, you be surprised how clogged it gets
