you will have to think like a seagull ??? and follow the trawler(bin wagon ) on its round so early starts as soon as most bins have been emptied they tend to be put back, you want them still out on the street

Not being funny mate but why don't you just put another van on the road cleaning windows and aim for 700 more customers?

you could start by posting in the General Cleaning Issues forum instead of the window cleaning one  ;)

Ah Dean you've spotted a gap in the market. Go for it then. Get a clip board and go and do a bit of market research, see how many people would want your service!

And don't forget to tell the people that you are their local window cleaner and their windows look dirty ;D

seriously tho, you have to sign up a hell of a lot of customers to make it worthwhile, and i understand from the guy who does is legit near to us that there are a lot of cowboy operations about doing it outside the regulations.

if you want to get an idea for the business the best thing to do would be to get in touch with the franchises operating them.  they will give you loads of info and you'll get a chance to see how they run their businesses too.  whether you decide to buy a franchise or not, you will get tons of useful information off them.

Dean. I've got a leaflet you can have that works well for me. Email me if you want a copy.

Successful bin cleaning depends on compact rounds and on realising that you cannot work until the bins are empty. This is sometimes hard for WC to get their heads round. If you clean custys windows on Tuesday or Friday it makes no difference. But the bin has to be done on the day it's emptied, otherwise they start filling it up and lock it away etc. And you're relying on binmen who might do a road at 7am one week and then 3pm the next.  Plus I'm guessing that you will be having someone working for you who will probably be costing around £1 per bin in wages of the £3 you want to charge. Add in the usual expenses of running a van and you need to be doing some decent numbers.

The point is that with bin cleaning you can't spread the load. With WC you can even out your customers. With bins you can have crazy days followed by days with not enough work.

Some areas take to it very well. Others don't. Personally I wouldn't consider a franchise because once they give you their know-how you've got it, but then you keep paying for it forever.

I can guarantee that if you start to drop leaflets then you will get customers. But I can't say how many. I dropped a thousand leaflets it one area and I got forty. I dropped 200 leaflets in another area and I got one. Time to start isn't Summer - it's now.

Make sure your setup is legal. Waste water must stay within your van/trailer and be discharged into a foul drain every night. Register with local water board and get a waste carriers licence.

Good luck if you decide to go for it.

Most of the bin cleaners round here have disappeared, very rare to see one these days. When you do its an illegal.

The bin collections went from weekly to two weekly and that messed it up for a lot of them. Also, we have three different bins all collected on different days and frequency

Go for it, I bought a bin cleaning business 12 monhs ago off a guy up here who had 1200 customers on his books, he didn't like doing it in the winter months and wanted to sell up.  I bought it just as the 3 months of icy winter was finishing last year and got it for a VERY good price  ;)

We now have 1650 bin customers and do them on a 4 weekly basis.  Around here the general waste bins are only emptied every 2 weeks, so I have two part-time guys who now work for me solely doing the bins every other week.

We use a Berlingo van and bespoke 300ltr bin cleaning trailer that has a hydraulic lift on the back for tipping the bins, it can tip both normal 360ltr bins and also the large 1100ltr roll tops so we've also picked up a good few commercial customers as well.

All in all it works well for us and makes a good margin.

Our biggest day is 230 bins.

The majority of our new customers have come from our established window cleaning customer list so I would say they are the ones to target first when trying to establish a new venture.

Hope it goes well, feel free to email me or call if you need any further help.

We also have a flyer that works well for us and you're welcome to plagurise!

I bet collecting is a nightmare and I can imagine that the administration of whose who and who owes and whose cancelled and whose on the books isn't much fun either.

I'm such a negative gimp at times. ;D
