Phone call at 915, this morning, just back from walking the dog and cooking my breakfast.

Previous custy for cleaning had a pipe burst, hall, understairs cupboard flooded, into lounge as well. Went out, 18 miles, extracted over 100 litres of water then lifted carpets and underlay (still soaked). Was on site nearly two hours plus travel time. Insurance assessor due Tuesday afternoon. If not replaced the lounge and hall carpets will need re-fitting (not buy me) then cleaning with removal of tide marks and anti bacterial product to prevent mould.

Nice people, do not want to overcharge but its taken away my Saturday!

you've done the right thing (IMO)... and i'm sure youll charge accordingly and the customer will (should) understand that

Phil that would be roughly £150-£200. There insurer may pay it but will wonder why you didn't install any drying equipment.

Hi Phillip,

As you stated ''the've taken away your Saturday'', you are in business not charity, if they are nice genuine people they should expect to pay a premium for the premium service that you've delivered.

If these people are 'ultra regulars' cut some slack possibly, if not charge accordingly.

John - I left them with two heaters, borrowed at my suggestion from neighbours. To be honest I only have a large air mover, not suitable for a domestic hall. I confess to being "only" a carpet cleaner, not a flood or restoration expert.

Hi Philip,what did the insurance say ? What were the carpets
Axminsters,Wiltons,Tufted or what ?
You say re fitted not by yourself,but in a week or 2 it could be
A nice little earner going back with a knee kicker,re-stretching
Out the shrinkage. :

Carpet fitting is not a game that comes to you over night.  More than likely he's gonna need to replace the smooth edge if its been soaked so if its a concrete floor I hope your handy with a hammer. Ever try driving masonery nails into an old concrete floor. Not for the faint hearted and you'll take lumps out of the skirting boards. Refitting the new felt is an art in itself even.  Then trying to refit a Wilton of Axy with no fitting exp. Its gonna be kinked and twisted all over the place and you'll end up looking useless in front of your custy watching as they always want to "see how its done". I was a fitter for many years so I know its not just as chirpy as grabbing a kicker and chisel.

I spoke to the customer today, Insurance company will stand the bill for new carpets throughout the downstairs, after de-humidifiers have been left on site for a while and pay my bill no problems.

I would not have re-fitted the carpets myself, I'm aware of my own limitations!

Customer very happy with me, has booked me in to clean stairs and all bedrooms so got another job out of it
