snow and freeze london
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:02:58 am »
Snow finally got to us last weekend went out but pipes froze up around 10 am and first house froze up instantly, had to call it when my pump was showing dead end when pole was pluged in as the dead end was ice in the hose reel ;/ ;/

today is not great snow and -1 and 0 degrees to highs of 2 probably workable but i decided to not go out  ,not heated connys and roofs today would most likely freeze.

problem is i have to go out tomorrow plenty of first cleans to do all the customers are ready will have to heat van over night and give it my best shot but its -3 -1 till midday...

maybe i should call it off for next weekend? but rearranging first clean customers is a pain

what to do ..   .  .

also how would a heated system benefit in this kind of weather how would it work in the morning with frozen pipes and how will it work when water hits the glass will it still freeze?

Why not speak to the people concerned for tomorrows work and just explain the situation to them. Just say you'll do you best to get the work done, but with the temperatures forecasted, it may be that you have to postphone the cleans to a later date, in order to complete the work in a safe manner for all.
They should understand, afterall it's nobodies fault it has got so cold :)
If they don't understand, well perhaps they wouldn't go further than a first clean anyway :)

you keep the inside of the van above zero with a oil filled rad so nothing is frozen, then in the morning when your about to set off turn the water and heater on and let it run for a few minutes so hot water flows through all your hoses and pole,

no messing about with frozen pipes hoses etc and you can go and earn money, the heat from the heater actually keeps the inside of the van warm whilst your working

and as for water freezing on the glass, i've not had it happen yet even at minus 4 on a unheated conservatory,

sounds like you have lost the money already from what it would cost to go hot

It wont stop unheated connys from freezing over

indeed it seems hot wash will pay for its self.

its been an easy winter for us but not working today was the biggest blow i had a half day off last weekend too and now tomorrow doesn't look great.

ive had water freeze on houses anything below -1 im surprised you havnt had frozen glass yet?

so how does this £185 hot system work then sounds very cheap what i would do is turn it off when you have cold days i dont wana risk the heat reaction to cold im sure you could get a crack and im also sure hot water freezes much faster then cold?

one thing thats worth it is heating the pipes thou that sure is worth £185

I don't doubt that hot systems do have benefits.
But i've been working today with a cold water system since 9am with the hose laying in 3"- 4" of snow and had no problems at all. There were 10" icicles hanging off the conservatory gutters!
If you keep a heater in your van overnight on low and keep the water flow going when you are working you shouldn't have any problems.
The main thing is to stop your gear getting frozen in the first place and remember to stick the heater in your van.
I only jacked it in today because my boots were soaked after standing in snow for 4 hours!
