In praise of immersion heaters

Used mine Wednesday night it worked like a dream.  :D
Water was approx 40 deg C by the morning. Kept everything frost free and van was warm all day.
Hoses supple and easy to use and water didn't freeze on the windows.

All for about £50. Wish I had done it years ago.

Might use it all year

Type immersion heaters into the search engine - we've put the details up quite a few times now - some with piccies.

I got a good day in yesterday with supple warm hoses. Yum!

Got a link to the links where the details were put up?  C'mon, be helpful now?  Did you put the links up?  I'm happy to trawl through your back posts?  If not can you remember who?  I'll trawl through theirs.

If you go to matts f o r u m & search "immersion heater's going in" you'll find the best immersion thread ever, with all the links, info & pics to boot. ;)


Mine has really saved my neck this year, better than a van heater & keeps hoses supple all day! I've not lost a single day to cold this year & I'm north of the border! :D

I've used these ones on e-bay, (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Immersion-Heater-Mechanical-Tank-Flange-Boss-Biodiesel-Wvo-/140695717435?pt=UK_DIY_Materials_Plumbing_MJ&hash=item20c21e463b#ht_600wt_1344) but beware that if your tank is 10mm thick, there's not much thread to catch on the back, I had to throw away the rubber o ring and even file down the flange a little bit so I could tighten up ok.

I've installed two immersions now, one using a flange and one by just cutting the hole a little too small with a dremel and letting the immersion element make its own thread in the plastic of the tank, and if I had to do it again, I'd choose the latter method.

Got a friend who can fit an immersion heater in my 800L tank no prob. Was just wondering about you guys that already have them fitted: as clearly the heater isnt ON once youve started working, for how long after do you find the water is warm on cold winter days such as now?

fitted mine long ago not used now as i dont do much cleaning but in a flat tank i put mine half way down drill hole one of these on the inside of tank http://www.oilybits.com/brass-immersion-heater-ring/prod_460.html then immersion element on the out use some sealant ...heavy duty cable as long as you only heat it up for a couple of hours it works a treat

I used to put mine on at 5am till 8am stayed warm enough all day 8 hours enough to keep all hose etc frost free and dried quicker in ice on the glass without cracking
