2 men van setup help
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:14:22 pm »
would like some advice about 2 men working out of 1 van.

Do you both work out of back doors? in my mind this seems like it may be a hassle-fighting over space etc. or do you have one setup out the side?

also do you us seperate pumps each or just spilt after the pump?

if anyone has pic of their 2 man setup would be great, cos i am stumped at the min.

am also trying to decide if best to do hous each or front/back.

i know there are quite a few of you guys who have 2 men working succesfully so would appreciate your advice as i respect it

cheers sean

ps--hav done research on old threads but am struggling to find what am looking for-maybe im spelling it wrong?

Recently started a two man set up.

Loads of customers have been mentioning how fast the job is done and commenting that i must be earning quite a bit. Even though there are two people to pay. Not a conversation i enjoy having.

With this in mind we try to do separate jobs although this isn't always possible.

We both work of one pump and controller. Some don't like working like this but works for us. Dont find water usage to excessive.

This was my set up , before i went back to the simple life (just me)
Both the reels could go from either door if needed , made life easy if you coulnt get in close .
I ran 2 of everything , only went this way cos i thought if i was ever out on my own i could switch to the other system in the event of a failure , then fix the broken system when i got home .

We have now moved approx half our work to 2 man van - before we had 1 man 1 van set-ups

overall the change over has been good  feeling a lot fresher at the end of the day. reels come out the rear doors
plenty of room and usually the first man back will go collect and the other reels in.

parking can be an art to allow both easy un reeling if doing seperate properties of large places where you head
in different directions.

heres a pic of how the van looked when i brought it. ( still pretty much the same - just some minor jiggling about )

I have 2 of everything, with 2 hose reels out the back door.

when 1 pump went down, we used 1 pump to 2 reels but found whilst it worked ok, it did favour one hose over another, I think as p and f said, if you have 2 then you've always got a backup as well.

no pix to show, will try to update later on laptop.

oh, and we do house each if possible, ours are typically 3 bed semi in housing estates. or can do front and back if big enough.

we work with 2 guys but only one working on the pole and the other is van driver, and helps with the hose and customer etc.

we're told its simpler that way as with 2 poles working at speed you get tangled up and frustrated.  this is if we're on domestics.  on commercials its different as you're spending a lot longer in the same place.

An interesting approach....

Thanks guys..thats given me some food for thought.

I work with my wife and we have tried me poling and she drives, helps with hose/tickets but hav found on most of our work (medium -large detached with cons) after lying out enough hose for me she is stood around not doing much. she does wipe of sills after ive cleaned windows but i know he finds it frustrating because she can pole and has covered all the work when ive been off ill before.

it doesnt really work for us this way anymore, so i was thinking of an easy setup where she can do next door or front of house etc only trouble is me  ;D ;D i found it really irritating when we tried it a couple yrs ago because were both trying to get gear out back of van at same time. maybe its just me. also chaos when we both trying to get stuff back in.

can anyone suggest a good alternative routine?

its all in technique. I lift both reels out back door, and whoever has to go furthest with the reel, the other person helps feed the reel out (or you get 40 meters from van and have to walk back cus reel fell over, thus wasting time.)

we have vw caddy, so slightly smaller than yours. no reason for it not to work once you get the right routine, then 1 normally winds up while the other checks cills etc or collects. jobs a gud un!

i agree with AS (altho i have fixed reels and would never go back to lifting them in/out) who ever pulls the rear or longest distance grabs their pole and hose the other helps feed the hose out,  i find pulling a load off quicker than the walker allows you to get away quicker the reeled off hose then follows the route nicely. then the 2nd man/woman is away.

it all takes practice and knowing your work and your working partner - i work slightly faster than the chap with me, so i try to take the property or side with more windows to finish as xlose as we can together
