careful of dodgy advert scams
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:21:05 pm »
i recently had this guy  ring me about a advert i might be interested in placing in this charity magazine. i said possibly interested but not yet as im not that flush . that was about 6 weeks ago . then i got a magazine through my door in an envelope with an invoice saying i owed 360.00 .  so got in touch and they said they got it on tape that i wanted the advert. so not happy and did a little research on this company. turns out they have done this so many times with lots and lots of people. normally new businesses. they get a cheap one off magazine stick a tacky advert with my business name on it and think cause they made 1 copy im gonna believe this is in mass production looked up on the web and so many people have been ripped off by this scam its unreal . the next thing they do is send a debt agency to my door . apparently this agency  is run by the same guy who is one of the bosses of said charity. looking forward to them turning up cause im not the type of bloke who takes people trying to rip me off lightly . im gonna kick off watch this space

It is true that if you agree to placing an advert over the phone you are liable for payment.
Crap I know but it is lawful.
But from what you have said it doesn't sound like you agreed to it.
Stand your ground and don't let them get away with it. If what you say is true their story will never stand up in court.  ;)

I Had the same scouse guy(well im pretty sure) ring me 3 times over the years 1st time ( in my 1st year as a wc) I fell for it, I got told I would be the only wc on calender being sent out to schools etc they would send me 20 copies to give to my best clients etc. When it arrived, there was only 1 not 20 and there were 2 other window cleaners on it and there ads were about 6 times the size of mine! Only then did I suss the scam, I phoned up and told him where to shove his invoice nothing came of it.
Then a couple of years later the same chap phoned and I told him I knew what he was all about, he told me to f@$* off and hung up!
Then again last year!  :o I just hung up as soon as I realised who it was.

I get them ring me all the bloody time mate - from what I've read on here, advertisers seldom get much work from them so I always say a firm no and stick the phone down - you can't beat a bit of door knocking and networking
Andy, not sure chap, but do you have the right to listen back to the 'recording' ?? Would be interesting to hear their response

I had a guy ring me saying
them: thanks for advertising and blah blah, where do you want me to send the proof and so on
me: i said hang on not agreed to any,
them: said yes you did
me: nope, when was that then?
them: such and such date
Me: let me just look at my call records (tap some keys, rustle some paper) nope mate no call then
them: well you will have to go ahead
me: nope did not authorize one, decided not to advertise before that date so would not have done so
them: well then expect a £450 invoice for canceling on your desk in the morning
Me: nope, you can try, maybe send it straight to my solicitor! it will go with the contract that is my office in lah lah land

and months and months on nothing, not a leg to stand on!! them that is

If someone phones me and they're a business, I say I'm with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service):

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

This normally makes them hang up straight away, however there are those companies who do 'surveys' and they tell me they are not covered by the TPS regulations, so then I say, "I am sorry, I do not mean to be rude, but I am going to hang up", and then I hang up.

If I want to spend some money on advertising, I'd come here, and start a post about it and get some feedback from you 'orrible lot, and not from some dodgy phone call out of the blue.

I had this happen a couple of years ago, I said I would think about it and maybe I would go ahead.

anyway I never heard anything until a few weeks later a booklet turns up with a simple advert in it, it was supposed to go to every doctors surgeries in Birmingham.

A few weeks later I get the call for payment, I disputed that I agreed to anything, pointing out that I have a PDF file that I use for all my adverts, and what they did is nothing like what I use.

They then come over all stong armed, by demanding payment and if I don't, then this and that is going to happen, I did say they are quite welcome to come and try to collect the money from my house, they had threatened to do this.

They even suggested I was being threatning on the phone, as if I would ;D and the call was recorded and would be handed to the police.

I'm still waiting for the visit and after some checks no doctors had recieved the mag.
