RO too fast
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:33:57 am »
Hi all,
I have had my 300gpd ROMan for over 3 years and it has performed brilliantly giving 001tds water before resin from 100tds tap water.
Recently it began to produce a lot faster than normal with production water a lot quicker than waste water and it is now 003 to 004 ppm before resin (which most people would be very happy with).  I know this RO is designed to produce 50/50 pure/waste and it has always done so until now.

Can anyone tell me what may have caused this change and if it is the restrictor that needs replacing?
Thanks

No, water pressure is same as always.
I think it is to do with the restrictor and that it could damage the membranes if not sorted.
Even if the water pressure was to go up shouldnt the ratio of pure to waste remain at 50/50?

isn't there a waste valve on it that controls ratio? on my 4040 there was, when we moved and or water pressure / flow changed the valve needed adjusting.

the flow rate could have improved, so the static pressure might be the same, but the (can't remember name for pressure while its flowing) might have improved.

don't know otherwise how these other membranes work, sorry

What may well have happened is that the waste restrictor on the unit may have become partially blocked with age. This has the effect of decreasing waste flow which increases production rate albeit at a slightly poorer quality.

The solution is to replace this flow restrictor with a new one from RO-Man.

Thanks for your ideas everyone.
The membranes are still fine and there does not seen to be any valves etc other than the flow550 restrictor and the flushing valve/control.
Alex, what you say seems to be what is happening and I had already emailed the RO-Man help desk.
I always thought it was to do with the flow restrictor and it is good to have someone with experience confirm this.

Well I have replaced the flow restrictor and it has made no difference.
Still producing at around 3 parts product to 1 part waste.
Straight out of RO and before resin at 005 tds (tap water 96 tds) and at a rate of around 20 litres in 15 minutes.
Is this likely to damage the membranes??
Thanks
