booster pump location

just a quick poll, mine's located before the pre-filters but I was wondering if it'd make the RO more effective if it was immediately before the RO, not having to shove water through pre-filters, more pressure and all that...

opinions please.

surely has to be before every time? if it was after would be getting less pressure feed into it, my pump (Clarke cbm) is well up to job, but still needs sufficient water pressure and flow getting to it first.

when i spoke to June at gaps water she said either way will work but ideally after the pre filters but as i understand it the reason for this is just to protect your pump as the filters have taken out any of the larger crap in the water.

i put mine before just because it was so much easier

the way i see it is if the pump is 10lpm (made up figure), and the pre filters only let through say 5lpm then the pump wont receive enough water.

where if you have mains water to the pump then to the filters the pump is always fully supplied.

well, I understand the logic, but more people on here have voted BEFORE pre-filters.. so far anyway..

and I know that just cos everyone's doing it doesn't make it right, but I think I'm gonna try it and check the readings, if the membrane starts being more efficient, then good and well, I can always change it back again if not.

be interesting to see if there is a difference. shouldn't have thought would be big enuf debris in tap water to damage booster? tho I could be wrong.

Your pre filter do not need pressure. The membranes need to be pressurized. So the booster pump must be before you membranes.

I've heard this before, 40/40 i think is rated to about 225ish psi, but the pre filters are a little less than this, I have my booster fitted after pre filters.

I agree with wizz kid , and if you look on pure freedom site it mentions putting booster pump between pre-filters and membranes as thats where pressure is needed .Im using a water butt pump to pump through the pre-filters and have no problems with booster pump overdrawing ,normal diameter hosepipe going into RO pre-filters then quarter hose from pr-filters to booster pump and same to membranes .

Just out of interest, what size hose is the outlet on your 20" pre-filter housings?

And do these vary with different manufacturers?

The reason I ask, if you could get a nice fat 15mm throughput, water would get through REAL quick, not causing a problem for the pump...

check pipe work in house too, you may have small feed to hose pipe anyway. also does depend on mains pressure and flow, but the bigger diameter inlet will help given right circumstances.

question to the smart arses that say booster after prefilters!

how do you gauge pressure then? when I flush system I know what pressure to set it back to for the correct pure to waste ratio. my pressure gauge is on pre filters. so booster needs to be before the pre filters surely? and if system is pressurized from booster to RO, does it matter if goes thru filters too while under pressure?

sure that's where June at gaps said best put too.
