Employing
« on: December 18, 2011, 05:00:28 pm »
Hello chaps i am just about to take on some part time staff working 16 hours at min wage, my accountant says they will pay no tax or ni and that i have no reason to tell hmrc as it doesnt matter as they dont earn enough, have any of you done this as i feel there should be more to it.

Woody

Your accountant is an idiot, even though they are working 16 hours at minimum wage, they might have or will get another job, which takes them into the tax and ni bands.

If this happens you need to deduct tax and ni.

Don't forget you are still liable for holiday pay and in a couple of years a pension as well.

What if they have 2  partime jobs.... course hmrc will need to know otherwise they wouldnt pay any tax or ni on either job.

I think you need a new accountant if thats what they reckon....and im not even an accountant to realise hmrc need to know
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

no matter how many hour they work you still have to register as an employer with hmrc.

also you need employers insurance.

I'd personally hand it over to an accountant and let them deal with all employee related matters, they normally charge very little and It's a whole host of potential hassle handed over.
Life used to be full of up's and downs....now i hardly ever get up a ladder :) .

That's what I do,when my accountant sends weekly wage slips I put away the tax and n.i deductions, the accountant then sends me the monthly bill from HMRC....costs a little, saves the hassle

Depends on how much he earns per week.
Go on to the HMRC site and have a read through it all, it's not hard and when you have done that send the link to your accountant with a letter releasing him from his duties with you..... :)
Once you get into doing the wages, as it can be done on line through the HMRC site, it will only take you a few minutes per week, so forget about asking any accountant to do it for you :)

i employ 2 p/timers and as said just get registered at hmrc and its reasonably easy to work out, plus a helpful person is on the phone there if u want advice. i expect to av 4 partimers this time next year and dont foresee ever havin full timers .

places like macdonalds and what have you, mostly only hav parttimers and it shares the load so to speak  ,if you hav fulltimers they can get bossy and they know they have power to muck u about

I would get another accountant pronto, let them do the wages and that stuff, why do it yourself when you can pay someone else to do it and have less stress.

as said above you need employers insurance, you can use a company like simply business for this if you didnt already know this ;)

If you are just starting out employing then paying A N other to do the wages is a waste of money.
It is so easy on line, just set up the employee details and each week you key in the date you paid them and how much gross. Answer a few tick box questions and push enter....it calculates any tax or NI due. You can also print off these details and us them as a wage slip.
You will also be e-mailed when the tax and ni payments are due to be paid to HMRC and at end of year you make your selection and it does it all for you.

If you were going into the realms of employing 10 or more then perhaps think about getting someone to do the wages, but in all honesty, if you have average keyboard skills then after a couple of weeks entering 10 lots of pay details should take no longer than half an hour :)

I get a phone call If I email and say theres a change and say how much and thats it all it's done for me yep I pay for it, but defo not a waste of money, I leave the people that do that stuff to do it, I concentrate on making money, each to thier own but I dont want to do all that stuff, I learnt that the hard way.
wasting time IMO is far worse than wasting money, you cant buy time. So if starting out I would recommend you get an accountant to do it, it is stressful enough employing why add to it.

If anybody wants to use a payroll agent, who specialises in single employees right up to a few hundred, then email me for details.
This company is also a registered BACS agent?
They are s**t hot, and it's such good value it's embarrassing.
