business partner or employ
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:01:39 pm »
need your advice,  getting bored with business, as work on own a lot, got  mate who use to be a window cleaner, but had to jack due to ex wife,  anyway he at the moment is working for his dad for £180 a week for a 50 hour week, so is looking to get out,  i want to get some one decent after xmas,  as it gives me the drive to work more, as currently i earn enough for me to live,  but want to get  bigger,   but am stopping my self from as sick of the idiots who come for jobs,  i have had this lad in before last year and he is ok prob best of the crap i had in,  (didnt take him on as he went out on his own)

what do you guys think i should do,  just go for it employ and get him knocking as well for first few months, or offer partnership and expand the business that way,  this way if cash flow low dont have to pay wages, just half of what we got in

Employ as why give half away just be prepared to work in all weather. Lowish basic with bonus on top so if crap week then paying less in wages.

Also get him knocking or as you will be getting through the work quicker you will have empty days so chance for you to canvass.

Maybe employ him part time until ur business bigger.

Im currently having a sort out of my work load and selling a chunk off in an area Im pulling out of - no problem with area just want to concentrate closer to home then will be employing part time van lad to get thru remaining work quicker and then get some canvassing done with the emphasis on quality residential and smallish commercial stuff

Business partner is a no no unless he brings something to the table like a lump of cash. If you made him your buisness partner you would loose half of your business straight away.

Employ on min wage with bonus like Ian said

Does she earn herself £30 per hour at her job?
Maybe time for a rethink,me and my Mrs work about 16 hours a week and we get a good return.
In this game the sky is the limit as regards what you want from it.
Work alone
Work with a partner (not good unless its the Mrs)
Build up and employ, 1, 2, 3, 4, or multitudes of workers
Your the boss, its up to you

If you could find someone who was willing to invest and had a lot of drive and ambition, it could really make the difference to your business.
Re employment, you have to kiss a few frogs and all that to find a good one, and then unless you look after them, they will set up on their own. Frustrating isn't it.

i wouldnt let him door knock or canvass as he will know how to do everything and especially if he finds an untouched gold area of streets he might then likely leave .

Employ - not business partner.
It's a game of three halves!

thought of this, but one of the reason he jacked in was ex wife and fact he could cope with being self employed,  he is one of those people who need to be employed

I'm with the employ. you can make it worth his while with bonus etc. if he's a good un then there's your motivation to get out there, without parting with half of what you've built up.

defo..... Good luck Colin :)

All depends on what your business plan says if your going to continue to stay small under vat ya prob best employing if you have larger plans maybe it could be worth partnering up as when it comes to business loans etc 2 people have better chance etc unless limited sit down and do skills tests etc and see if they compliment each other

What ever you do, DO NOT have him as a business partner.

Apart from the tax complications, it'll never work in the long run. It'll come down to who dominates. Up untill that point things will be fine but in the end, one partner will try to dominate the other and thats when the friction starts. I've been down that path twice and you'd have thought I'd have learnt from the first time.

One thriving successfull business down the pan and one that had real promise both gone up in smoke.

The end question which will blow the business apart will be ' who's business is it? Believe me, it will come down to that after loads of silent and unspoken differences of opinion of how it should all be run and who does the most work.

But.... it'll all be rosy for maybe the first few years. You'll be good friends, have good ideas, drinks on a Friday night etc but underneath it all...... I look back and now think it was all there right at the start but I didn't see it.

Do it as the boss or not at all.
Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.
