Parkinson's disease linked to cleaning solvent
« on: November 14, 2011, 08:14:06 am »
On BBC news this morning that trichloroethylene (TCE).

TCE has been used in paints, glue, carpet cleaners, dry-cleaning solutions and as a degreaser. It has been banned in the food and pharmaceutical industries in most regions of the world since the 1970s, due to concerns over its toxicity.

Anyone know what products have this in them?

I've had a look at the degreaser I use and it doesn't mention TCE. But I'll be checking all my stock....

I worked with all the solvents named in that report from the late 70's to the late 80's when I had a proper job.  :'(
One place had a "trike tank" recycling trichloroethylene and we used to degrease our hands in it.  :(

What was the question again?  ;)

I wonder what we're using now that will be discovered to be extremely harmful in 40 years?

Its alright for you lot, you'll be dead by then anyway - but I'll just be preparing for retirement!

Hi Guys

Dennis, we used loads of TCE  when I worked in the lab and yes washed our hands in it too!

My father suffered with Parkinsons, very bravely but it's not nice !

Looks like I better enjoy myself.

Cheers

Mine too! what a horrible disease it is >:(
Paraquat weedkiller has also been linked and many many other things. So i guess it will take a very long time for someone to 100% confirm that any substance is a cause for a disease....

Trich was discontinued in cleaning products some time ago. It used to be a standard spotter and bloody good it was too.

trich ( i think it was known as 113 in the dry cleaning industry) was outlawed yonks ago and yes it is very harmful to all organic life including humans.

we heard stories of how in the past people used to literally put the stuff into pump up sprayers and spray it all over the place.  They inhaled it constantly and the amount of people with lung related disorders from the previous generations of the dry cleaning industry is very high especially cancers.

One old timer i met told me that he used to climb into a full tank of the stuff to clean out the filters etc... and this is without any sort of protective clothing !
