My main business is Lionheart Cleaning Services Ltd which now employs 21 staff and covers just about every aspect of cleaning, just added Wheelie Bin Cleaning to it earlier this year and that's going VERY well, got 1400 customers already on 4 weekly clean.

Other businesses include:

Furniture Clinic Leather Restoration - one person fully employed on that

Pedal Power Cycle Hire - we work with a lot of cycling holiday companies from all over Europe supplying bikes as well as people and baggage transfers for the longer cycle routes in the North East and Scotland (C2C, Hadrians, Coast & Castles)

Seashells & Sandpiper Holiday Cottages - had these for a good few years now and my wife basically looks after them but they are booked nearly every week of the year now.

(See websites below)

We've also just invested in a static Hot Foam Pressure Washer and will be setting up a Car Wash station at the workshop on weekends starting very soon as there's nowhere close by to get cars washed, closest drive through car wash is 14 miles away.......we'll see how it goes.

i would love to have a business drive like you have mate. Well done for what you have achieved. How long has all of this taken you to do?

I'd imagine it to be a headache at times also

Busy busy Mr Rochester!  Sounds very busy.  I know some friends in Ireland who built up a cleaning business, they did most of the towns around where I lived, night clubs, carpet cleaning, holiday homes, had quite a team.  But was working all hours for very little money as they went in cheap to get the work.

Alot of work isn't always a good thing.......unless you are making decent margins, in which case its a very good thing!

Keep up the good work Mr Monopoly!! :)

ian rochester is a certain type of individual!i know for certain im not one of them!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

i have a very decent window cleaning round coupled with the extras like conservatory roof cleaning and fascia, soffit cleaning.

i am happy with my lot.im not overly ambitous.i have a nice income all year round.ok it dips a bit during really bad weather which to be honest is not a problem as i have an emergency fund built up throughout the year.i live quite frugally as i dont drink or smoke cigarettes anymore and i never live above my means!!

i like to keep things simple as it makes me happier!

i dont work flat out 5 days a week either!i find that being organized, working at a brisk pace i can get through my 300+ customer base with days to spare at the end of each month.

JSMC dont wish to be like someone else!if you want a bigger business go out and get the work!!

one things for certain i wouldnt want to be working 5,6,7 days every week anyway!some people thrive on stress, pressure, chasing more work etc but its not for me!

in my spare time i help alcoholics to stay sober.unpaid in monetary terms but i get paid for it by staying sober myself.all good valuable work.

regards

To answer a couple of the questions:

I started out nearly 9 years ago (Jan 03) after being made redundant as a Factory Manager, starting on carpets with an Extracta Exel and then gradually added on, took on first employee after 6 months.  I've always been of the opinion that "I can do that" before I look at offloading it to someone else!  The only big cleaning we haven't starting doing yet is oven cleaning.  I've got a caustic tank and can clean an oven to a decent standard, but I just think the margins are too low for the effort that's put in to it, it's probably fine for someone self employed, but not employing....at least not in my eyes at the moment.

Yes it can all be a hassle and I sometimes (often!) wish I was self employed again, however there are probably more positives than negatives, like yesterday I spent the day Christmas shopping in Newcastle, had a lovely lunch out with the dearly beloved in the knowledge that the business was still running and making money (not necessarily profit  ;D)  Last week we took a day off when all the schools were closed because of the strike and went for a big walk with our daughter up in the hills around Wooler, again lunch out at a little pub!  There's a growing theme here  ;D

Everyone who works for us knows what to do, I don't have to watch over them or worry that they are taking the p!ss.  In some cases I only see some of our commercial office cleaners on a monthly basis and some of the part timers even less than that.

I think I could stop tomorrow and know that the business would carry on without me without too much disruption.

We don't go in cheap, we're actually probably the most expensive in the area, partly because we're VAT registered and have bigger overheads than others, but also because we don't want to work for nothing and be busy fools like some out there.

My real passion however is for the cycle hire business, I've now got around 60+ bikes (20 new ones added in September).  I would love it to be in an area where I could spend all my time concentrating on that.  The mind set of the people who hire bikes is totally different to our cleaning customers, they are on holiday and looking for a good time and wanting to explore the area, they're not people winging about how a sill had been missed on the last window clean or complaining that we'd put the price up by 50p!!

We've just invested in a new 3200 sq ft workshop and this has made a massive difference to how we operate, home is now home and work is in a totally separate area.

I agree it's not for everyone, but I like to think we've gone the right way.

YOURS FOR £???,???

you still living out in glasgow? word of warning for ye be very very carfeul if setting up that kind of business in your area. These cash businesses are taken up by some very unsavoury people. The east end and surrounding areas are a bit mental matt.

Cheers for the heads up mate. I know what you mean. I'm on the south side, and haven't seen a bin cleaner round here since I moved in.

Why? you want your bins cleaned?  ;D

Not sure yet mate, havent had a chance to email ian yet, and its just a thought at the moment..

I've seen a few bin cleaners around when ive been on site doing my own jobs, but none around my local area. Im sure there are, and i know what your getting at with the cash business around here but its almost 2012, we arent living in the 70's/80's anymore and these blokes who think they have the right to run a shoddy cash bin cleaning business out the back of whatever cheap transit they have this month, deserve a bit of competition.. i hate these guys that think they own an area, in any business..(rant over, sorry)

Seems like a good oppurtunity, and am definitely going to look into it..
