Jason,
I'm not suggesting they don't. The risk is, 'what if they don't?' You may well have that one covered but I suspect for one reason or another lots of less experienced cc'ers will not and that is why groupon could be suicidal.

The problem is that it's a highly leveraged strategy and although you may think you have covered all the pitfalls you won't know until you start cleaning for your 200 cheap cleans.

The upsell/recommend argument is perfectly valid, but not everyone is going to ASK, and that's probably part of the reason they are having to consider Groupon. Get it right and then scale it out.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

I think the main reason people choose groupon over conventional marketing is they see it as a quick way of getting a lot of jobs quickly, probably because they are struggling to fill their diaries by any other means.

Plus of course there is no initial outlay.

Of course there's an initial outlay. Few and far between carpet cleaners can afford to work for  £11.40 per, job which could take a couple of hours. The cost, by way of subsidising each job could be enormous which is why so many fall foul of it.

Simon...

Thank you for that post, it makes lots of sense and I appreciate you taking the time and effort to explain.

If I were you though, I'd leave the Groupon Groupies to work it out for themselves, if their businesses fail because of it, their silence will speak volumes.... ;)

Cheers...

The proof in the pudding will be the statistics, the average spend to time spent on site.

Where did groupon get the £29 for 3 carpets from anyway? Prices vary from company to company and areas.

It is groupon that is deciding the price structure here so not good for the carpet cleaning industry as a whole.... people will now think normal prices are low also.

That's a good point Bob, as there's no set price for other services so maybe it's being imposed on c/c's.

After all, if you normally charge £80 for a living room, then three rooms are going to be around £160 which at half price would be £80 or even at 70% off would be £48 which is a long way from £29 :o :o

If there isn't enough time to do the job right,  how do we find the time to go back and do it again when the customer is not happy ?   Do it right the 1st Time.

Keep Groupon going.
I'll just service their  repeat customers who can't
get booked in.
Oh and all the others who ring them from their other
adverts but can't fit them in.
