Look elsewhere.
The bloke cannot be trusted.
I tend to go with a gut feeling in these situations.

Unless you have made a down payment on the van he has every right to advertise it.
You may have agreed a price but have not committed to the buy. From his perspective you may be another messer.
Sorry not what you wanted to hear

I would have agreed to leave a small deposit with a reciept then made it a condition that it was to be removed from the market

had shaken on it, and agreed to pay the asking price, as was happy with it, just had to wait till wednesday for the cash, as only had 600 on friday and get a other 650 on tuesday, might just keep the cash and look for a new van and do some more saving up

personally i think you are probably messing him about.he is probably covering his back by making sure people know it is still for sale as he doesn't know you will turn up with the readies.
If you had been serious about it you would have left a deposit.
what happens if something happens and you dont get the cash, then the bloke has to try and sell all over again.if you want the van then it wont make any differance if he has it up elsewhere or not, when you get the cash just buy it....

i would have put 50 quid down as a deposit. got a signed receipt and if he happily wrote the receipt id know it was a done-deal.

If you didn't leave a deposit then he has every right to continue to sell - been caught in the past by people
wanting to buy something, but having no cash until next week - when next week arrives they have 'changed their mind' usually beacause they still have no money.
you are only a serious buyer if your leaving some hard earned dosh - allbeit £50

I would go along with saying that you should have left a deposit as a sign of good faith. A small one would be enough.
I once shook on a deal when selling a van. Never heard from him again. I had to buy another week's advertising and another week's insurance for it. It cost me. A small deposit would have covered that expense.

Handshakes mean nothing, how on earth does this guy know you will be back on Weds? He doesn't. What if you get offered a bargain for £500, going to turn it down so you can buy this chaps van? Ok you might phone him up and tell him you dont need it anymore but that wont sell his van for him would it? He may well of already had a dozen people round who all said I'll be back in the week to buy it and thats the last he's seen or heard from them. Fact is if you leave a deposit fair enough he should honour any agreement but if you didn't then its his van and he can do what he wants
