Can't give it away !
« on: October 30, 2011, 06:38:48 pm »
Hi Guys

About 2 months ago I donated a one room cleaning voucher, nominal value £70 to a charity raffle run by friends.

Well as yet nobody has redeemed it and I spoke to one of the organisers who knows who won, and who has said they probably will not use it!

I didn't put anything about it being non transferable so you would think they could find someone to give it to.

Funnily enough I was in Oxford St today and there were guys giving away 'free shirts' and everyone was giving them a wide berth.

Cheers

Doug

Doug over the years I have done a similar thing 5 times and only ever had one redemption. Its very strange.

Seen something similar on telly a while back where they were trying to give away fivers. People wouldn't take them. Good job it wasn't in Newcastle or they'd have done them in and took the lot :)

The trick is to run your own raffle I guess.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

We offered a free 2 room carpet clean from our business. Not willing to give away aerials or tech ect, so thought it was a kind gesture.

It was for a charity and the selected numbers could choose any of the prices laid out on the table, 10 prices in total.

1st person chose a de vere weekend break for two.
2nd person picked up a selection of wines from the world.
3rd person took the dyson vacuum.
4th took a meat pack from the local butcher.
5th took the thorntons chocolate selection.
6th cant remember.
7th person took a voucher for the use of a local decorating business for 1 day.
8th person took a pineapple.
9th person took a box of after 8s
10 person took the p**s when he looked at our voucher and put it back and had a look under the table. Cheeky prat!! Thankfully never took us up on the offer.

So the moral of the story is ... if you give to charity do it for the right reasons and you won't be disappointed, if you want to make money, you be the one who gets the tickets with the addresses on the back.  8)
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

to me this shows people really don't like the idea of getting their carpets cleaned. they got a free clean and don't care to take you up on it as either they just don't care or think you'll end up damaging them/making them dirtier quicker.

like with the free shirts i'd be thinking they must have something wrong with them. why would anyone want rubbish free shirts that are about to fall apart after one wash

Ian you are right!! when i sold Kirby, we used to go door to door offering the chance to win a free voucher for carpet cleaning.

but I posted last week that i was offering money off vouchers in a letter, but when I removed the offer  they got more response.

people are suspicious of anything free, look at the tv advert for Holland & barrett they are saying buy anything and get a second item for 1p..... why not say buy 1 get 1 free they must believe charging 1p is more effective

I think you could be right, I cleaned a carpet at an EOT job yesterday and the next door neighbour asked "Doesn't cleaning the carpet damage it?" ??? You can see why the public need to be educated!

Back to the thread, I have given away 3 vouchers and only ever had one redeem it... There are some odd folk around... ;D

I donated a free room clean to the value
of £40 to wife's friend for their church raffle
last year and not heard anything since.

You should sell pre-owned portables instead, then you'll give them away!!! ;D

And the lesson is......When it looks too good to be true it most probably is. :o

Luckily we're all friends on here (well mostly) because technically I'm sure the guy buying that machine entered into a contract to buy that machine at that advertised price, and could have kicked up a right fuss.

And the seller would have had to compensate by making sure he was in the same position as before the contract was agreed (ie, refunded his money).

Maybe thats why groupon offer 70% off instead of by one get two free.

Ive never found offers to be that effective in this game.

Same here, I never do offers yet I get plenty of work.

I never even advertise "competitive rates" because it's not what I want to be.

We gave away 2 of them it turned out. Within 10 mins of the post on cleanitup a second one sold. Bloody technology.
