Why would insurance be interested in the size of your tank? As long as its within the van's payload then there isn't an issue surely?

My son in law was looking for insurance for his Transit Connect L220 LWB (825kg payload) with a 500 litre tank. The lady he was dealing with told him the tank's too heavy for the van and they would need proof of suspension, brake and tyre upgrade before they would ensure him. Insurance quote with upgrade £2000.00.

Got in touch with A Plan, no problem £500.00.

The moment you get a 'clueless' on the phone, don't waste your time with them - move onto someone else is my advice. But do tell them politely that they have no idea what they are talking about and you will be going to speak to someone else who does. Hopefully that call (they are all recorded) will be played back to someone who can sort the issue out and with further staff training and policy changes, make insuring our vans more competitive for all of us.

Insurance are getting more fussy and refusing to insure tanks over 500 Litres.

The number who insure over 500L has dropped dramaticaly over the last year.

We are currently paying £4.5 k on an any driver fleet policy for 6 vans, only 2 of them have them have tanks over 500

Will it make any difference cost wise if you go back? Have you asked them as insurance had gone up for nearly everyone this year.

this year got commercial policy. about £375, fully comp, no axe-idents, 2 years no claims. told them its for window cleaning wfp with tank, tank classed as load as not bolted so no problem, don't want to know size or anything. got vw caddy, 750 payload, with 650 upright (can fill to 400 to meet legal payload).

is it only a problem presumably if modified, ie bolted into chassis?

dave, if they aint bolted in they area classed as cargo, yours are bolted to van so are classsed as a mod

I would guess, after going down this road with my insurer (Gladiator), that an unsecured tank would only be classed as cargo if it were empty and not connected to anything else, eg Delivering it new. Otherwise if it's something that makes up part of a system that is carried all the time it's a mod. Though Gladiator did define a mod as ANYTHING the vehicle didn't have when it left the factory. So theoretically that would make me a mod?

its a grey area and each insurance company has different rules,  but since mine can be taken out with in a few minutes, it is cargo, as nothing is bolted down, only with straps

Yep, definitely individual rules designed by the insurance companies to extract more cash from us and weasel their way out of paying up.
If you hadn't guessed I have a very low opinion of car insurance companies in particular due to personal experiences where I honestly feel that they have made the rules for maximum profit and in any other walk of life would be operating outside the law. I'm not blanket covering all of them as I know there are at least some good ones out there but they seem to be getting harder to find. But like most things nowadays you only find out how good they are when you actually need them and by then, if you've chosen badly, it's too late!

ditto, interesting concept that if its permanently there, its classed as modification. I would argue it can be removed in minutes its not fixed. if they'd prefer could remove my ratchet straps and let it slide around everywhere, like a proper delivery driver!

I've not had prob yet, in my 2 years wfp yet anyway, sure will catch on!

dave, was with direct line first year, no probs. normal policy. got this year with autonet insurance, underwritten by ageas. think got them off that meerkat website. 405 quid (just checked). 15000 miles per year. as its commercial policy haven't got third party insurance when driving other peoples cars.
