Hot System Digital LCD Temp Probe on Pole
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:42:23 pm »
It seems like most people with hot systems measure the water temp coming out of the brush with a bucket and thermometer. Not really that accurate since the temp varies with the amount of hose outstanding and the ambient temp.

After some brainstorming, I've mounted a digital temp probe right in front of the trigger. Off the shelve parts for about £5. Don't think this is done before. Depending on the amount of pole hose there should still be some temp drop on the brush end, but hopefully a lot more accurate this way.

Please find attached picture down below.

Parts list :

Digital Temp probe :

John Guest 8mm Equal Tee

Couple of mini cable ties.

The actual probe is only 3mm in diameter, so it needs the following to make it fit in the equal tee. A small length of 8mm hose, less then a cm so that it's just recessed under the JG collar. The probe needs a little bit of electrical tape to fit snugly in the 8mm hose. Even then it's not really watertight at all so needs a bit of filling with epoxy. The actual tip of the probe sits right in the flow of the water.

Tomorrow going to test and see if it's all watertight and holding up all right.

Will post back.

It would help of course if I mount the display the right way up. Nice for the picture, not so handy in use!  :-\  :D

Probe works fine. A tiny little bit of water still came out of where the tape is, so I put a load of adhesive on there as well, so should be all good.
Apparently the temp of the cold water in my tank is 10c, nice.

(Not sure anyone cares?)

Used it for most of the day today, really fascinating to see how the temperature changes. Unfortunately even after walking back to the van, the water really cools down in the hose.

I accidentally knocked my hand into the display quite hard today and managed to make it say 'LO c', it doesn't actually tell me anything anymore. Bummer. Need to take it apart today and see what's wrong.

Oh and it still leaks from the bottom of the collar. Needs more adhesive. Good thing I've got about three of those glue thingies from Gardiners.

I need to find a different way of mounting it as well. Maybe some Velcro sticky pads.

Not a bad idea that, do u reckon i could put a 6mm JG fitting on the brush head pipe, then fix the temp gauge on the back of the brush, and work out some way of water proofing it? :-\

Could do yea, I think I'm going that way perhaps. Not much use at height as you wouldn't be able to see it, but would be great on a collapsed pole. You could vacuum wrap it with one of those fancy machines to waterproof it, forgot what they are called.

Do you know what, the more ive thought about it, i think what a blinding idea that is! It would be good for a quick check of the water temp between windows in the winter, and if uve got a fogwash split between 2 operators and 1 turns there tap off, i would think the other pole temp will rise? So uve got a reading straight away without poncing about. Could even put a 6mm t-peice with the temp pole guled into it maybe. Nice one tim ;)

Thanks. :)

Somebody I know had two poles, one fog wash. Cold frosty morning, stopped flow to one pole, other pole got so hot it cracked a pane.
Haven't been through a winter yet with the hot wash, but they say on frosty mornings only 20c over ambient to make sure no thermal shock occurs.

Depends on what brush you've got (jets, t piece)

Gardiners pole hose will be 8mm, which then goes in the t piece from 8 to 5mm I believe.
