Put a few tennis balls in there - that'll stop it freezing.

i was told you still need to insulate tank but the movement in the tank will stop it freezing!
Plus obviously tank is warmer and not open to the elements like a pond in your garden!
if this was true, pond wouldnt freeze over

Don't put water in it. That'll stop it.

It won't do the fish any good, though.

I would be very surprised if it works.
Fish respond to cold water by slowing down their body's metabolism and becoming sluggish to conserve energy. It's a natural instinct for them to be fairly dormant in winter until the beginning of spring when the water temperature increases.
On the other hand if you put half a dozen goldfish in there and one hungry piranha you are pretty much guaranteed the goldfish will swim like f*ck.  ;D
