It's like anything else - it all gets put in the pot divided up and split as per the court settlement. The only thing to consider is what it's value is.
Generally:-
Lets say its a geezer and a wife and young kids.
House and contents:- Wife and kids live in it - geezer has to find a gaff
Car:- Wife needs it for taking little darlings to school
Van:- Geezer
Mens Clothes:- Geezer (Tosh might claim a pair of frillies from Wor Lass)
Business:- Geezer has to have enough to support himself, wife needs to be able to support herself, lover, kids. Geezer gets shafted.
To save hassle - put down a deposit for rental on a small gaff, draw out a grand in cash - savings, loan whatever drive away in your van to wife's solicitor - sign everything over to her; set up a new bank account, go to work collect cash, buy a curry go home, set up for the next day, microwave and eat curry, watch telly, whinge on here, go to work next day, repeat ad infinitum.
In about two years your head will clear.
