Who do you think your talking to!
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:16:45 pm »
Can forums benefit from more controls?

Controls such as including transarency of users. In other words, this is your name, business and contact details?

transarency
Lee, did you mean transparency?

Forum's should be transparent, too many git's hide behind daft names. Yes, I think they should or you don't get to sit around the camp fire anymore.

lee you have no email, location or website on your profile, why not? all we know is your name.

If you want change at least lead by example

so back to the original post, which was an open question. Do you think a forum would benefit?

Maybe, but it might prevent you from asking questions here and then telling us to read all about the answers in your magazine. Another way of looking at it is that by declaring your name, business and contact details then that is advertising. Something that i thought forums allowed on a modest basis before you paid for advertising. I can see the logic in this , otherwise the whole forum would look like a business directory. Are you asking that we should all be showing our business contact details or that we shouldn't be?
BTW, did CIU charge you to advertise your magazine and contact their membership or did they let you do it free?

I don't see it in that way. The contact details are there for us to input our real info. Mine is good example of how you can pay no attention to this area just by not thinking about. If a forum made you fill in the details as part of the signing up process, do you think this woul help?

not sure I follow you regards magazine. I have no shame in telling folks nor do I have any shame about setting up a topic on ladders to make a point of how divided we all are on the use of ladders then letting people know that I will be doing a ladder special thus clearing things up.
I have no shame in free information.

not really it easy to lie on sign up.

and when I did put my website up it gave me loads of inaccurate info on hits, I am not interested how many fellow shiners visit my site just how many of the ordinary public do.

also when my other email was present I had some very strange emails from some weirdo's and I can only guess it was from this or other forum members who didn't happen to agree with what I said or done

I'm asking you what is it exactly you are asking? Are you asking that we all should have to put our details up or that we all should not? I would say we should all not have to. I couldn't care less who i'm talking to. There's a fine line between showing your business credentials and advertising. Most forums charge for advertising. Did CIU charge you for advertising your mag here?

I'm saying it would be helpul if you knew who you were taliking to especially in the rare cases of abuse. I set up about 3 or 4 topics last night and witnessed a lot of hostile behaviour. As always I thought I would open up the debate .
Not sure what your asking regards magazine. I discuss it and tell others when ever I can becus it's free. Sometimes I have dropped it into a topic where the mag has covered or will cover. I have no shame in that. And no one has asked me to stop. With regards to advertising on CIU I asked for there rates two days ago and they have sent me them asking me if I need any more help to let them know. Not too sure what your driving at? If I missed your point I appologise :)

You have to give a name and address to join some forums now and it can be checked. Lots send you an activation message back to your email.

I don't think it matters; it's easy to create fake e-mails, websites, join up with online names.

So what's the point?  I bet most of us know other window cleaners here in real life, and if you want to get hold of someone from here, it's not difficult.  I know loads of guys from this site 'in real life'; many of whom know where I live and have been round my house at some point.  So there's transparency in that.  I bet many of us have 'facebook' friends from members of this site too; more transparency.

But we've had members falling out with each other, even phoning and threatening another.  And Squeaky got a lot of dodgy calls at odd hours for a period, a while back.

I think the forum is okay as it is.  Most of us know which posts to take with a pinch of salt, so it doesn't really matter I don't think.
