how soon are companies oblidged to PAY UP
« on: November 05, 2005, 10:33:21 am »
Ive been doing Office blocks lately, and usely dont have trouble getting payed within a few weeks.
There are a few, despite being sent red reminders, still havnt payed up after 3 weeks.
I'm aware that large businesses can be a pain in the bum to get money from, however, I'm wondering what the legal standing is as regards them paying within a certain time period?
Anyone else had this problem, and what would you do, say if they dont pay after a final reminder has been issued to them?
Help appreciated.... :-\

3 weeks ::) wait 3 months then start complaining!

I never expect payment before 4 week, do you think your bill goes straight to the top of the pile, most companies pay within 4-6 weeks its just the way it is, unless you specify while quoting that payment is on completion.

It was quite clear on the invoice that it was due immediately..might pump some slurrey through the letterbox ;D...any idea after how long, court proceedings should be the order of the day?

Hi Scott

I don't think that you will EVER EVER get paid imedietly from a company, unless you are extremely lucky!! I have waited up to 3 months for payments. Do you specify on your invoices what the terms of payment is? ie within 30 days? If you do this it gives them a guide line, but i doubt whether they will adhere to it :(

Scott,

Once the work is complete, then the invoice is due. Giving someone 30 days or more has no basis in law.

Generally though I work on strictly 30 days. After this a 7 day payment due letter is sent, stating "no further reminders will be sent and legal action will be taken".

After that I goto moneyclaim online and issue a summons. Ther summons usually makes them pay, with all sorts of excuses why they forgot.

Even after that, if they call for more work to be done, I tell them on a pro-forma invoice only.

Remember business is tough, and its not until you go through the pain of waiting for money, to keep going, you realise that you yourself have go to act.

Scott,

To issue a summons,  upto £500 is £30. Over £500 its £80. The cost goes onto the amount you are claiming.

Some try to get out paying it, but then you just tell them the debt is not fully paid, and they will end up with a CCJ against them.

No matter the amount, even if it's £50 or less. You must chase this money. I know people think your not going to be bothered,  for small amounts.   Thing is if you've 10 peopel owing £50, it £500.

I get paid within 7 days, I offer 2 prices, price 1 the real cost of the job and price 2 inflated to allow for 30 days. I hate chasing payment so it is put on my quotation and explained before and after I start the job.
