old people, there i said it. Does anyone employ anyone older? I have taken on a guy who is 62, in this climate he seemed a really good candidate, he seemed fit enough to do the work, yet could not get a job anywhere after being made redundant, so grateful for the job, and also is not better of not working as some of the young ones can be as not stuck in the benefits system, so along with the other factors he seemed a goer.    .................. and all is ok 3 weeks on except his health is really starting to look like it could be a problem and he's really short of breath working etc. anyone had experience of employing older people? any thoughts please?

Remember the elderly are not fit to start with so give him some time. I am 62 and would put many of my fellow windies to shame to shame.When I started i COULD NOT PICK UP A TRIPLE LADDER OR LIFT A 25 LITRE DRUM i WOULD DO ALL WITH EASE. GIVER THE OLD BOY A CHANCE HE WILL SURPRISE YOU STILL.THEY ARE OLD SCHOOL, GOOD VALUES.

Good post Adolph. However if he is out of breath due to heart probs then he might want to go careful.

Stick with him, Andy.
He might also need time to build up his fitness levels. I reckon you'll reap the benefits and have a good worker in 20 years time  .

thats the other thing different to the yung uns though, its the staying power, his cv consisted of 2 jobs, he had been made redundant from both, but good 20year jobs, staying power

but def need a lighter pole!

i have my father in law working for me, he is 67 and loves it. right little charmer with all the old custies haha
