It looks to me as if there are some who are burying their heads in the sand, especially those who are saying that they are unaffected by the current economic climate. Before my relocation to Ireland in July I was one of those who was doing well enough to have work coming at me from all angles, so I also felt that this would last forever.

Since my move, I have started up my new round from scratch. I am telling you that it is very tough here. I am finding work, but it is much harder to get established here than in Blighty.  No-one has the confidence to spend any money, and window cleaning is way down the list of priorities here.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a doom and gloom merchant, but I am seeing a lot of people struggling to survive here. That is reality. So let's not take anything for granted just because we may be doing well now. It could all go belly up tomorrow, and there would be little if anything we can do about it when things really do start to fall apart..

Being diplomatic is being able to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Ireland is in a bad way and it will take decades for things to really improve there. One minister decided to pass the bank debts on to the tax payer, why? Something bonkers like 200 billion euros. The banks must have been as baffled as the tax payer was. What had the tax payer done wrong? Absolutely nothing.
My suggestion for what it's worth is to stop watching the news and reading the tabloids. The shock and fear factor is not really helping anyone.
Continually market your business. even if it is just dropping leaflets either side of every customer and sticking cards in newsagents windows. It never ceases to amaze me that so many of my new customers are thrilled to get a regular wc. The new customers our out there. At least a third of my customers will be getting their gutters done over the next couple of months and while specialist equipment makes it safer and cleaner to do, you can still do a good job off a ladder, so no expense involved. Get out there..

Total cost of bank bailout in Ireland - around £10K per person. Total cost in UK (assuming share resales go at a reasonable price) about £200 per person.

Completely different worlds. Ireland crashed from a boom that had LONG been described as unsustainable.  The crash was always going to be very hard.

I reckon Western society, as we currently know it, is going to collapse within the next five years.  There's not enough money in the World to cover the current World debt.

Borrow £10 from me and the net position for the World is unchanged.  No matter how much is lent, someone is lending and someone is borrowing, so the world as a whole is not indebted to anyone. Unless the"World" is borrowing money from Aliens.

Thus, the second part of the quote is impossible, so I'll take part one with a pinch of salt.

they are not borrowing and lending money much anymore rather they are just printing the stuff with nothing to back the currency up with, this can only lead to a major rise in inflation which is what we are beginning to see now, all past major civilisations including rome and greece have basically gone down the pan by devaluing their currency.
if you use real currency to value items then you realise how much our currency has been devalued, ten years ago you would require approximately 300 ounces of gold to buy an average house at todays rate you would need about 200 ounces of gold so our currency has been devalued by a large percentage, as for what lays ahead i havnt got a clue all we can do is try to adapt as things change.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt
