« on: October 07, 2011, 11:06:09 pm »
Hi all, i started my round last march and this will be my first winter. im trying to get prepared for the ice and snow etc. can anyone advise me of what i may need to make my work easier?

ive heard de-icer in the water is good to stop it freezing on the glass.

also someone told me of ladder spikes ??? i dont know how true they are....

any advice would be greatly appreciated .........Thanks in advance.

I would not be up a ladder in snow and ice mate broke my back and was very close to being in a wheelchair for the rest of my life , when ladder slipped on wet paving dont take risks start practicing with a trad pole .   One mistake and you could be out of work for a while if not for good .

some lads i know use deicer , just go out and soon as its warm enough i used to test on my own windows when trad and if it froze up i stayed in and checked temps and glass every so often.   MIKE

No ladder work in snow mate, downstairs only for a reduced price. Try screenwash 50/50 mix to stop freezing on the glass. USE COLD WATER!!!!! Hot freezes !

How do you guys use wfp in ice and snow??

Understand you can use heaters / thermal etc for application.... but still problem dripping unto paving etc causing ice  just can't see how you can use wfp when its freezing commercials especially ??

heat the van with a oil filled radiator left on all night on a low setting, bring pole, reel, trolley or pump inside, cover tank with a duvet.also 2 x 300w aquarium heaters in top lid of tank if its gonna be really cold overnight.

wfp tops only on some work and avoid windows directly above the front door for example.

carry some salt/grit around with you and put some down around pathways.

if its really cold that the hose is freezing on the ground or windows go home!!

if its prolonged very cold weather then trad pole with screenwash in bucket works for me on some run of the mill domestics and leave the wfp at home.

starting later even if its just 11am-3pm will keep you ticking over if we get a really bad spell of extreme weather.

if its 2 foot of snow enjoy the time off and dip into your emergency fund!! ;D ;D
price higher/work harder!

7 am - look out of window. If bad/cold/icy/snowy weather put head back under blanket.

8 am - repeat and shout in a muffled voice "goodbye" to the wife as she goes off to work/takes kids to school/shopping etc.

9 am - repeat; but have a wee/dump and back to bed

10 am - repeat; but tool downstairs for a fry-up and a mug of tea/coffee.

10.30 - Watch "Judge Judy"

Noon - if thawed out go and do a few hours work; if not watch some awful daytime rubbish on the TV or watch UK Gold for some priceless comedy.

1.30 pm - a light lunch of cheesy chips or chips with curry sauce or chips with gravy

2pm - if thawed out do an hour or so (if not then just drive a few miles away and kip in the van) and stay out until it gets dark or wife gets home and come in complaining about how wet/cold/ill you are and in a squeaky pathetic voice ask plaintively "any chance of a cuppa luv?"

5pm - a light tea of chips; pizza and beans

Obvious really!  :D
