whatever you do,DONT  buy a rubber mat .   i tell you for why, i bought a laddermat and its promoted (still is !) as good at stopping slipping on smooth surfaces -  one day i put it down on a quarry tile path and went up my ladder - whoosh DOWN i go in a crash as the rubber mat slipped out .nearly broke both my ankles

ive since learnt that rubber sometimes loses its grip, when its used outside/ inside is okay,i believe

thanks for post, yes i thought that with a rubber mat, sometimes they can loose grip big time, I was thinking of getting  (although I dont know where) something like roofing felt or boating top deck flooring

Laddermats are terrible, I've had a nasty slip with them, thankfully I walked away with no damage.

The LadderM8rix is THE best ladder safety device you will buy. I've used one for 4 or 5 years now. Never slips. Snow or ice doesn't matter.

I now have spikes fitted to my ladders. these i trust ,in fact i trusted them on ice during  last winter- as long as there was a rough surface beneath the ice (concrete ) they dig in well .  i keep the tips filed sharp

i read on these forums about spikes being the very best (posts by long time server windies) and whats good enough for them, good enough for me

having said all that,i never will put a ladder on a quarry tile path EVER again, even with spikes fitted  ,i use a pole in such cases instead.

[ after my fall ,i got in touch with the inventor of the laddermat, but he wasnt concerned about my welfare ,tried to fob me off with all manner of guff about various tests he had paid to have done (non on smooth surfaces though) on his invention.
how he can still praise its great grip after what i and others have told him shows him to be a true rogue /  Even now  both my shins still have nobbly bits on them from where they almost broke but then healed in the weeks after my accident ]

Here's a couple of Pics of what I use, had them for years now and are so useful.
I got them from B&Q years ago now but dont think they are available anymore unfortunatly.
I used them today inside afactory on slippy smooth flooring as you can see from Pics.
They never leave my van, and just slide onto ladder legs when needed.
Originally paid £30 ish...

PS they were made by ABRO

Laddermatts are a good. They are designed to make the climb safer, not safe. Some people think they can do ridiculous things with a ladder just because it's on z laddermatt. Always use common sense aswel! A great product at a good price IMO

I use an old thick bath towel for marginal surfaces. It's never caused me to slip. If I were in any doubt that it would, I wouldn't climb the ladder in the first place.

Years ago a 40 year experience window cleaner friend in York told me that in winter on snow and frost they just used to use Hessian Sacks for anti slip purposes!
Said they never had any problems on those winter surfaces.

What do people use to keep their spikes sharp?

One or two customers have recentlly laid smooth tiles in there gardens and at moment I have been trying to put my spikes in between the tiles in the grooves for safety but I am thinking of getting a ladderm8rix as that looks the best.  But can you use one of these if your ladder has spikes?
