Call out today
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:51:52 pm »
Had a call out today from a company doing some restoration work to the lining of a customers chimney.

They'd had a bit of an "accident" and there was soot all over the clients carpet (not a problem, we can deal with that  :) )

However there was more, they had also been using Caustic Soda to clean the lining of the chimney and that was all over the carpet to!!  :-\ "We'll come straight across and have a look"

By the time we got there (less than an hour later) the pile on the wool carpet was coming away in great tufts!!

The lad working on the chimney was in a right state, it was his dad's business and he is away on holiday in Italy till Monday.

The carpet was probably around 30m2, good quality 100% wool in an old vicarage, it'll be probably £2K+ to replace it.

On a positive note, the customer was impressed with our response and we're now  doing 3 carpets for her in a couple of weeks time.

Live and learn!

Hi Guys

A good illustration of how alkali attacks wool.

Sodium Hydroxide is obviously highly alkaline but some of the cleaning poweders are pH 11 which will damage wool if left in cotact.

Cheers
