Gonna be fun!!!!
« on: September 28, 2011, 09:48:04 pm »
Just had this email

I've never had any dealings with the rug doctors urine neut so I'm hopefully going to go ahead and just treat as usual and do the backing and underlay etc.

A bit concerned the fact it smells 'musty' the musty smell with a hint of urine tells me he may have drenched it and it's gone mouldy!!!

I get all the good ones me!!!

Any tips

It is a particular area of carpet that I am concerned about. Somehow or other, I managed to spill urine (my own) on the carpet around threee months ago. At the time i tried to use a store bought cleaner (Rug Doctor's Urine Eliminator) to clean it. I kept the area very wet as per the cleaner's instructions - but I think I kept it too wet for too long. Once it dried after a few days, it still smelt of urine and a bit musty. However, I had to leave the flat soon after, to return home for the summer, so simply left my window open, and hoped to air the room over the summer.

Upon returning 5 days ago, the smell had improved slightly, but there was still a smell in the carpet - now a more musty smell, with urine in the background. I tried cleaning a few areas of the carpet again, again with Rug Doctor (though this team being careful with how much moisture I used) but found no improvement.

I've checked the underlay, and while you can see very clealy where it got wet from my original attempt at cleaning, I am fairly confident that it doesn't smell.

Andy,

I had one like this and it's a "tip of the iceberg" job.

The family were boxing up possessions prior to a house move. This upset the dog who started peeing everywhere.

The guy "cleaned" it several times with a vax machine.

The carpet felt dry all over but once I used a moisture detector, we found the underlay was soaked over the whole area of a through lounge.

Result; the householder had to lift the carpet and replace the whole underlay.

Best of luck (better still, take Colin's advice and run).

Most moisture meters would be of no use in this scenario , as they would pick up salts in the urine and confuse it with  moisture , far better to lift the carpet , use your nose,or use UV light .
I clean carpets
I dry Buildings

check  under the underlay for damp, it may look like the underlay is dry but underneath may still be very damp and now to far gone.

if it is the underside of underlay or the flooring that smells, lift carpet and underlay, clean flooring, mist flooring with clensan, renew section of  underlay thats contaminated, clean carpet.

done this a few times with no comebacks.
