seen a round for sale in south yorkshire but they are asking for 25% upfront before I meet customers...is that normal?

also said they were selling as they were moving into commercial work but found there business in kitchen cleaning and was bought from someone else not expanded as stated.

bit clueless on the way rounds are sold as more used to businesses being sold through business agents.

No not usual but maybe that's how they do but normally u would meet up and walk the round to get idea of what's involved then maybe work it together then hand over dosh and u get the list ... That's how I've done buying and selling

Meant to also say make sure u get meet some customers as well but having said that last year I spent five figures on a round and did NONE of what I just advised and all was well

You are within your rights to ask for a sample pricing as you could end up with 1000 £2 houses.

you have got try work it out yourself if they might be trying rob you,i payed upfront when i brought my work as the bloke was just as worried as me,after all i could be tring undercut him/pinch his work but i knew where he lived so if he was trying something dodgy i could go back to him

get them to take round to each custie so they know they are selling and u are buying that way u meet the custies and any that cancell can be knocked off the price also u will see if he has been keeping the round up to date and wot prices he charges

TRUST is the issue - they are scared you will nick their work and you are scared they will rip you off.

Get them to show you a list of fifty addresses - no names - no prices and say "I want to pick any five from this list and you take me where I choose and you introduce me."

If he is really selling genuine stuff he will be happy to do so and if he wants it kept quiet from the custy you can be introduced as an assistant or manager or something.

If introduced you can ask the seller in front of the custy "How often do you call here?" Smokes out being charged for two monthly stuff at monthly prices. 

If that all works out then you can pay say 25% at the point he hands over the lists with names frequency and price - plus you agree to pay the balance on a monthly rate over the next three months while you work together and handover.

thanks for all your replies. forgot to say that i met up with them last week where they showed me their little book with customer addresses and were asking for 1/2 up front. persuaded them that was a bit steep so they asked for £500 today, a further £500 after met a few customers this week (those that hadn't already paid when work was done). and the remainder at the end of the month before I would have worked the round. what do you think?

2 things spring to mind about someone who wants money up front

1)  is the work and customers really there ?      I would want to meet customers first and be introduced

2)  is the work under priced ?       I would also want to see the jobs and compare whether they are well priced or under priced.


never get blinded by a windows cleaners tales of  custy's always asking me to do other jobs like gutter and fascia cleans and the theres loads of potential to pick up more work.

remember mate its your hard earned money your giving away so before you hand it over make it your business to find out as much as you can

I have heard of other people buying a little book of customers only to find out after they bought it that they had sold the same book several times over.

It sounds iffy to me. I would ask to at least pick 5 random customers and then knock on the door to ask them.

I have never had this much drama when buying work.
