Can you help? Just looking into contract cleaning insurance....I'm told that for a cleaner working for me, I would need public liability and employer liability. That's approx. £150....

What do you do if you have, for example, 4 cleaners, each just working a few hours per week, at very small contracts......does that mean you have to pay £600 to cover them??

I know a company that employs cleaners to work only on 1 or 2 hour a week contracts....if they are paying that type of money in insurance, the cleaners would have to work for 4-6 months just to recover the costs!!! Surely there must be some way of doing this.....

Can anyone enlighten me please?

I think the answer/way round this is to go on "full time equivalents" aka FTE

So 2 people each working 20 hrs/wk = 1 FTE

and 10 people each working 4 hrs/wk = 1 FTE

but I recommend you clarify this with your broker or whoever you are dealing with

I had the same problem when I took my insurance. The ceapest that I found was with www.xbridge.co.uk (groupama) and I have it stated that I have 2 full time cleaners but the insurance will include any occasional cleaners for up to 50 days per year (combined) .

Hi guys

I am surprised at this one, my insurance company, and from memory those that I have got quotes from in the past, go on wages paid per annum.

I have 12 working for me at the mo, all averaging 10 ish hrs a week.  My public and employee liabilty costs £360 a year.

This is through natwest, have a look at their website www.natwest.com.

Yea your on the right lines Chris,

Staff wages, turnover, all have to be estimated for the price.

Some companies will only insure upto 5 employees, I must say your cover is very cheap!

hook, line & sinker with natwest, mortgage, life insurance, savings, bank accounts etc all with natwest but I don't think this has an impact with the business insurance as its a seperate thing.

only way to find out is to ring em.

Most of my business insurances are with Nat West, and have been for a number of years, however I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. As a broker they are one of the most inefficient I have ever seen, never returning calls, never sending mail but proclaiming to, and to their expense on one occasion being ordered to return 18 months worth of premiums which they did.

The only reasons I continue to deal with them is, their prices are middle of the road and they have taken on some special risks for me in the past and finally because my bank manager recommended them (also Nat West of course) and I love getting him actively involved when they screw up. 

They will tell you that there is no connection however it’s always worked for me. I think its " better the devil you know" in my case.

funny but mine is with Groupama and I was quoted (domestic insurance that is) £65.00 per year public liability and £120.00 per person employers liability regardless of how many hours they were working and no mention of wages or salary taken into consideration

Might be wrong Jan but Ive got a feeling they will only go up to 5 employees, I used to have insurance with them.
