Why do people think tm's are 'prohibitively' expensive? My first TM cost £7,500 + vat twenty odd years ago. Now, you can still buy an entry level TM for £7,500 + vat and because of the prices we charge these days you can have your money back in a month or so! What's expensive about that?

You should be able to do with a porty, it's all about having the business in place already, being organised and methodical about how you do things. (unlike your example the other day of someone taking half a day to do a few rooms).

you cannot do the same job with a portable they are far inferior machines. You just cannot grasp the fact can you. I have improved portables added vac motors you cannot replicate the performance of a truckmount unless you spent more than the cost of a truckmount doing it. Yes you can do a reasonable job with a portable but as a matter of pride somebody will constantly wish to improve the service they give to their customers and will ultimately end up with a truckmount. Either that or they carry on kidding themselves that what they have is as good as, it is lack of knowledge, which is something that I did for a long time.

No one including myself will dispute that ounce for ounce a TM is a better machine but I can easily do over £4k a month with a porty, so the statement about getting your £7k back in 2 months with a TM doesn't actually appeal when you do expenditure verses income or ROI.

So would I like a TM? yes
Can I justify the expenditure for the amount of work we do and is available? no
Would I build my own? yes if I had enough free time on my hands and the facilities.

Getting back to lawn mowers (from another post)    

I have a petrol beast made by Honda, it really does look the business, my neighbour has a little electric flymo thing, I do mine a bit quicker than him, but I have to admit he has the best looking lawn on the close

Well I picked mine up from the local tip,cleaned the plug,put some fuel in,started first time,that was 2 years ago,sits outside in the rain,best mower I have had...

No, our turf is bought from the same field, he always pre-vacs his first and he uses the correct chemicals to kill all the weeds and the moss, he does the edges with scissors on his hands and knees    but because my lawnmower is better, more powerful and much more expensive than his I dont have to bother     We can both start our lawns at the same time on a Sunday morning, by the time hes just plugged his little flymo in after vaccing I'm sat with my feet up, job done  logged onto this forum with a brew and a bacon butty in my hand

I using a karcher puzzi 100 could do just as good a job as you using your TM...............

Just because you have a TM does NOT make you a better carpet cleaner.
