Mattress cleaning
« on: July 19, 2011, 08:31:05 am »
I have been asked to clean some carpets plus clean a Memory foam mattress.

I have never done mattress cleaning before,is it a matter of treating the job as if doing some upholstery or is it a different process?

Could anyone offer advice on this please

Thanks

Wayne

Normally for mattress is a special tool with some ultraviolets or something like that. I personally did some and had no problems.

Wayne,
I'm not sure about memory foam, sounds a bit risky to me because the foam will suck up the moisture and take for ever to dry and probably make matters worse, smell / bacteria wise.

You would have to give it some soaking by the sounds of it and it would be the drying that would concern me mate..

For sure you'd need a blower.
We did one last week, well actually it wasn't a pucker mattress but just a piece of 6 inch deep foam.
The trouble with foam is that it doesn't release the moisture easily even just pre-spraying and using suction off the machine hardly reduces the moisture content by much.

I have had it up on my web site for the last 7 years, had 1 enquiry in that time, was from a really fat blokes carer he had massive lesions on his legs, which used to bleed and puss, all over his mattress,I turned it down.
Thinking about it I don't really wanna suck up jizz with my machine  ;D

I can see my post is descending into vulgarity ;D ;D

Anyway Ive advised the client that the mattress will not be suitable for wet cleaning and just doing carpets.

hi,
Carpet Mattress & Upholstery Cleaning & Sanitizing system and allergen removal machine with self contained, HEPA Filtration System and shielded UV-C Germicidal Light. UVC light completely destroys all forms of life: dust mites, bacteria, spores, mould, and fungi. This sterilization is carried out without any chemicals (dry).

Its all available over here and has been around (certainly very similar to what sanitech does) over here for at least 10 years - there are numerous franchise opportunities (eek!) available and to be frank most of them offer something for a huge amount of money that can be duplicated much more effectively and for a lot less money by shopping around - for instance a good nilfisk GM80 + hepa vacuum will do a much better job vaccing dustmites and dm doo out of matresses than a combined handheld uvc wand/vac combo- just try it with a clean bag in your vac and you will surprise customers with quantity of loose material liberated - and yes uvc will apparently stunt reproduction of mites and avoid the instant return of dm and dm doo in an old mattress - I have two uvc wands I imported from taiwan and they do an amazing job with mouldy smelling rooms and any fabric or furnishing related odours - what they may not do is solve the problem that caused the smell or mould in the first place AND OBVIOUSLY THEY WILL NOT REMOVE A STAIN!With a mattress most people want a specific soil problem solved - usually child pee or sick or blood in a mattress - staining issues - and no dry treatment will solve that!

currently on ebay there is a ridiculously overpriced vac/uvc system for sale from a canadian seller which has been on there for months and months!

some will want dm and dm allergen litter removed and there is a market for this service here but it is not huge and will take some pretty creative marketing to unlock enough income for a viable business plan based solely on that business activity - it might be easier to try and sell dodgy franchise packages - in other words its perceived as a huge market but in reality it is imho only ever going to be a somewhat troublesome add-on to ordinary upholstery cleaning -

So when a customer rings up with a mattress staining problem and you tell them you only offer a dry anti-dm treatment you are just back to whether you are prepared to wet clean a mattress with all the problems and pitfalls that entails - mattress ticking can be very difficult to clean stains out of and if you overwet a traditional felt stuffed mattress or a mem foam one you have drying problems
