for the boffins
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:10:39 pm »

 hi
signed up a new customer last week, turns out he used to be big in operations for a well known drinks company.

He was very highly qualified in liquid filtration. interesting thing he came up with. he says that what we call reverse osmosis isnt really reverse osmosis but microfiltration.

he said ro is through an imperviable membrane and cant be acheived at mains water pressures.

he used ro on big industrial tanks to concentrate juice without having to heat it .

 just thought interesting thats all.

He's wrong. Microfiltration will remove very fine suspended solids, but will not remove dissolved solids. You need reverse osmosis to remove dissolved solids.

Reverse osmosis requires (1) a semi-permeable membrane and (2) a pressure differential.

He's right that RO is used for concentrating fruit juices without heating, but he doesn't seem to understand that we use de-ionised water, not filtered water.

I remeber when coca cola starting selling their bottled water and saying it was the best on the market....... UNTIL it was proved that their bottled water actually came from a tap in a factory
