Is my leisure battery on way out ??
« on: July 12, 2011, 07:19:37 pm »
Got 2 man set up but mormally work on my own but lad been out giving me a hand last couple of days.

2nd pump struggling until I turn van engine on then plenty of power for 2 pumps.

Lesiure battery connected to van battery but no split relay charger ( I think no SR charger - didnt fit the system myself)

Would fitting a split relay charger help with this ?

Yes, or just do away with the leisure battery and run straight from the van. The leisure battery with no sr is actually pointless :)

i wouldnt say a leisure battery without a split relay is pointless, depends on the mileage you do ,leisure battery or deep cycle battery needs regular charging at low amps for long periods like 8 hrs or more ,all this depends on ah rating of battery and how much current the pumps draw, either way the best way to prolong the life of a "leisure" battery is to charge it regular and never run it flat
if you dont drive around much a split relay is not a lot of use and ordinary car and van batteries are designed to chuck out a large amount of ampage in a short time and not ideal for running pumps off

I'm not so sure running straight from your van battery is a good idea, simply because if you do flatten it then your van might not start. I have a split relay charger, i find if i use it myself (as in just one man) then i need to take off and charge the battery on a house hold charger about once a fortnight, if i run it hard with two men then it needs to come off every two or three days for a charge.

I knew i'd be wrong. :) Had a split relay in one van since 2003 with no probs and one van wired direct to battery since 2006 with no probs. Tried the first one without a split relay and flattened the leisure battery.

not saying anyones wrong its just my experience and what i have been told
i use a relatively low ah battery (21ah) cos that was what i put on my diy trolley, plus i can buy them cheap from a local mobility centre, its just a 60psi surflo and only draws about 3.5 amps so this battery is fine for 8 hrs use as long as you charge it on a low amp (3 to 4) charge overnight, everynight even if its only had a few hours use

fao luther,i have just re read this and now i see your point!!!
Ian if you have the leisure battery connected to van battery without split relay that is pointless
what is ah rating on battery?
what current do pumps draw?
how often do you charge battery off the van (if at all)?

Ive stopped using leisure batteries, just use car ones they are less than half the price and come with a 3 year guarantee.
I just re charge them every night,no probs.
