Ive been contacted by a nice lady who tells me her window cleaner who has been with them for none other than 30 years, and over 5 moves is close to retiring.

Basically I want to ask him for his work? Any ideas how tactfully I can get his number off this lady and then what the hell do I say to him?

Phone Mrs Lady and say:

"You know you said your window cleaner was retiring? Well I'm looking to expand my window cleaning business and would like to offer him a good deal for his work. Have you got his mobile number; or his landline will do?"

She will give the number and name or she might say:

"I'm not sure I should hand out his number, can I have yours and I'll pass it along to him?"

.....

Anyhoo lets say you get to meet him.

You say "Hope you don't mind me asking but Mrs Lady said you were retiring, I wonder if we might come to some mutually beneficial arrangement ..."

And then walk off into the sunset together!

Get his number and see if he is thinking of selling up, what have you got to lose? Tell him you were approached by one of his customers who told you he was possibly retiring and find out if you can make him an offer for his round

Nope, but I do know a couple of window cleaners who retired and practically gave their work away to the first guy who asked

Was speaking to an old boy last month who was proud to tell me he does a few streets of 90 odd bungerlows and gets £2.50 for each of them.

He said he was thinking of retiring so told him to call me as may buy his book of him ... may have to put them up a little though

I'm just planning to cease trad w/c due to an ongoing injury and am hoping to sell my round to another guy who's WFP. He says he can't aford to pay me a lump sum (I said I wanted 2x) but he'll pay me in installments, any ideas over how long the installments should be.
However, something bothers me, once he has the list of names/addresses etc I've not got any control over payments if he decides not to continue with the installments.

If I were you Dick i'd put it up for sale on here, or e-bay etc. As for your installments question thats easy if you are mad enough ( no offence meant ) to sell up for just 2x monthly value then I would insist you get paid from the guy in 2 months afterall you are pratically giving the work away so the least the guy could do is pay you in full after each month he's done the work. If he cant do this either I wouldn't bother selling to him.

If he cant afford 2months for it then ask him to spread it across 4 and you will probably settle on 5, but defo push for 4.

A general question Dick have you been putting your prices up over the last few years?

No longer than 2 months. Why should you give him longer? OK he says he cant afford it but thats not really your problem and if he works your work for two months a gives you all the money he would of paid for it in full without it costing him anything other than a bit of time,  and at the end of the two months he will have a whole stack of extra work. I really dont see why anyone would not agree to this, especially a guy who wants to buy a round but even at the bargain price of just 2x monthly value says he wants to pay in installments
