let me get this straight. there is competition offering a lower quality service at a lower price, and to compete with these lower quality cleaners you'll reduce your prices to be closer to theirs but keep the higher quality clean, so you're now doing a better clean and not getting paid for it? i assume you wont be matching their prices so you'll still then lose work to them

Basically dont do it. Its a stupid move.
You are saying you are not better than your competitors and so can not charge more. I would increase my prices yearly.
You will be working harder for less and will be putting your business at risk how can that be smart?

sean, if you are worried about undercutters, maybe you could eek out your cleaning frequency monthly to 6 weeks.

Or if your 6 weekly to 8 weeks, i know you will need more work so won't happen over night but you could sell this to the customer as you can't drop prices/ or a way of softing the blow for price increases.

Is this thread serious or are you pulling our legs ???

I think this is a genuine post.

We ourselves no work for a cuppa, perhaps a sandwich if it's around lunchtime - we provide the filling obviously - the odd customer might press a shilling in to my hand and it makes my week.

Times are hard and we should be thinking of the community not our own welfare. So what if we fall behind on our mortgage or rent; and the kids were looking a little portly - not any more mind!! - we'll all feel good about ourselves in the end if we cut cut cut until we're offering our customers a fiver to let us clean their windows.
